Calgary Weekender: November 22 through 25, 2012

The holiday season is upon us and with that a lot of events to attend. Don’t let the busy time keep you from checking out all the great things happening in the city.

Thursday night we suggest catching The Calgary Philharmonic’s performance Rattle and Hum: A Tribute to U2. The band exploded onto the world stage with smash singles like Sunday Bloody Sunday and Beautiful Day, and have given us three decades of extraordinary music. Join the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and Jeans ‘n Classics for this ultimate tribute to one of the most influential bands in history. Meet the band and mingle with other young professionals as you enjoy signature drinks and appetizers at the After Concert Gathering being held at the Trib Steakhouse on Stephen Avenue. Friday evening, head to the Alberta College of Art + Design for the Winter Show + Sale. ACAD’s best student work in art, craft and design will be available for sale (perfect for unique Christmas gifts), or take a guided tour of student exhibitions throughout the ACAD campus, which is a new feature to this year’s event.

More in the mood for an after-work libation with friends? Why not head to Belgo Brasserie for a glass or two of wine as you unwind from the week? Every Friday they offer $4 glasses of wine for the ladies, making it even that more delicious. More of a beer lover? They offer an extensive list of over 50 premium beers to choose from.

Saturday we suggest getting up and enjoying the great outdoors as you partake in the Catch the Elves 5km and 8km Walk/Run. Join other runners for the 9th Annual Catch the Elves Walk/Run to support muscular dystrophy research. This disorder makes your mind says GO but your muscles say STOP, and effects over 50,000 Canadians. Being held at Eau Claire Market, it starts at 10am you can participate in the walk/run or just stop by for the silent auction, food, and fun.

More in the mood for a delicious brunch with friends? Why not check out Bar C? Newly opened on 17 Ave (340 – 17 Ave), their evenings are already bumping. But the fun isn’t just for the evening. They offer a fantastic brunch menu and great pairings. We suggest the Crème Brulee French Toast, and don’t forget to wash it down with a quenching mimosa.

This weekend we also think you should head out to Spruce Meadows for their Christmas Market. Get into the holiday spirit at this International Christmas Market as you discover a magical world of scents, colours and lights. Check out the indoor market which features 200 vendors, or head outside for the outdoor courtyard, which features additional vendors and fire pits to warm your toes and holiday entertainment. Take a break to catch a variety of choir and instrumental performances, dance displays, and over 74 km of Christmas lights strung around the grounds.
