Calgary Weekender: November 22 through 24, 2013

From two world-class performances in the city to a showcase of local arts and crafts, there's no shortage of notable happenings to keep you out and about throughout the weekend. Here's what's on our radar (and should be on yours as well)

Friday

Around the World in 80 Days
‘Around the World in 80 Days’ opens this week at the Martha Cohen Theatre, a wonderful story the whole family can enjoy. Follow the fabulous adventures of Phileas Fogg, a Victorian gentlemen, and his servant as they attempt to make it around the world in 80 days. Along the way the two men will battle with rough seas, ride elephants and travel to exotic locales like Hong Kong and Bombay. Performances start at 7:30pm during the week and 6pm on Saturday. The Nutcracker
The Moscow Ballet returns to Calgary with the classic tale of the Nutcracker. This year’s production features a magnificent Christmas tree that grows over seven stories, handmade silk puppets and a collection of stunning new costumes.  Enjoy Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and let the ballet help you get excited about Christmas. The Moscow Ballet has wowed audiences with the Nutcracker performance for 21 years in a row in large part to their world-class ballerinas and danseurs. Saturday

Get Ready to Dance
Juan Maclean is in town this weekend and playing a show at the Hi-Fi that is sure to get you dancing. Juan Maclean, former member of Six Finger Satellite, completely re-imagined himself after his last band’s break up and turned his attention to the electronic genre. Maclean is all about mixing up the sounds of post-punk and experimental electronic. It’s a little house, a little techno, with moments of disco. Fun for everyone! Friday/Saturday

CUFF Film Festival
The Calgary Underground Film Festival is proud to present CUFF Docs, Calgary’s first documentary festival. The festival runs from November 21st to 23rd featuring nine films, special guests, and a wide variety of genres including art, world events, politics, biography, music, horror and found footage. This is a licensed event, 18+, so as an added bonus you can have a beer while watching the films. More information can be found on the CUFF website.

Saturday/Sunday

Handmade Here
During the weekend of the 23rd and 24th, you have the chance the visit the Handmade Here Art and Craft sale. 25 talented Albertan artists will be selling their ceramics, blown glass, jewelry, wood and paper crafts. The sale runs from 10am to 5pm both days. Come and stock up on Christmas presents, enjoy a few refreshments and meet the artists. Sunday

Future Shift
This weekend you’ll have the chance to check out a film that was produced right here in Calgary. Suza Singh wrote, directed and produced ‘Future Shift’, a Martial Arts Film set in the future that was shot in several locations including London, Italy and Calgary. There might be a few familiar faces as the cast features local Calgarians Chengis Javeri, Suzy Southas, Sunny Singh, Andrea Pipinato and Dianne Freeman. If you attend the screening this weekend, you’ll have the opportunity to meet the cast. Future Shift will be playing at the Plaza Theatre (1133 Kensington Rd. NW). For tickets, call (403) 283-2222.
