Calgary Weekender: May 9 through 12, 2013

Thursday
Theatre Junction Grand is holding their Fundraiser: Culturehouse Party on Thursday starting at 7pm. There will be dancing on the patio to music spun by some of Calgary’s hottest DJs with some of the city’s fiercest dancers, a few complimentary cocktails included with your ticket, delectable bites and a costume-filled photo booth; what more can you ask for of a theatrical party? Tickets are $100 and include a $70 tax receipt.

Friday
Finally, there are more places to go for après on Friday, and hopefully more places equates to the ability to score a table after 4pm. We hear CRAFT Beer Market has Canada’s only kegs of Stiegl Radler Zitrone, that lemony beer perfect for the impending summer weather.

Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby with Leo DiCaprio opens Friday and we can’t wait for it. Over-the-top lavish scenes, outfits and utter madness await if you catch the flick. If you’re up for a more in-person experience, check out the Great Gatsby – A Vintage Affair going down at the Fairmont Palliser starting at 8pm. Food, a DJ and 1920s-themed entertainment. The event is presented by Moet & Chandon and you’re encouraged to dress up in some Gatsby garb. RSVP via email to Marie-Pierre Gonneville at mgonneville@chartonhobbs.com. More info can be found on their Facebook page by searching The Great Gatsby – A Vintage Affair.

Saturday
The big show Saturday is VICE Magazine’s party at Hifi, where the Dudes and the Mandates are playing. Your free entry is contingent upon RSVP’ing in advance here. Show up early as it’s first come, first in. Doors are set to open at 9pm. www.hificlub.ca/

Sunday
If you somehow failed to find your mother a present by Sunday morning, get online and pick up two tickets to next weekend’s Royal Tea Baby Shower at the Fairmont Palliser. Tickets are $65 and include a glass of bubbly to toast the coming arrival of Baby Cambridge, baby shower games, as well as what one would expect of the Pallisers’ tea service. Looking for an activity to do with mom on Sunday? Does she have a green thumb? Take her to the Garden Guru Donna Balzer’s talk about the 10 Top Tips for Veggie Gardening at the Christ Church Cafe. The talk starts at 9:30am and more info can be found on her site.
