Calgary Weekender: May 30 through June 1, 2014

Friday

Tequila What?
The Tequila Mocking Bird Orchestra is rolling through town this weekend and you can catch them at Festival Hall on Friday night. The Orchestra is a sprawling collection of musicians that span Western Canada, their style probably best described as everything but the kitchen sink with a little flamenco guitar, African drumming and bluesy folk thrown in for good measure. This group will take you on a magical music journey that promises to be a great start to the weekend. Doors are at 8pm and tickets are $25.

Saturday

Block Party
The 6th annual SODO block party is happening this weekend, which means you get to stroll through the design district and shop some amazing sales, enjoy vibrant street culture, and take in a bit of contemporary art. This is the block to hit if you’re into galleries, salons, vintage shops, bakeries and funky designer goods. Every business on the block has something special planned, but you have to make sure you stop into Kit Design and Brulee Patisserie.

Tarot Party
Skip the bars and beer halls this weekend and do something a little out of the ordinary. On Saturday, May 31st, BassBus and The Dirty Gramophones present a fun and mysterious night of music, art and dance. There will be two stages on the main and upper level of the Legion, roaming performances and a gallery of art to check out. To keep things esoteric, there will also be an aura-reading booth, a tarot card reader and people on site to help you get in the groove with eye stencil art. There will be tickets at the door if the event doesn’t sell out, but it would be wiser to buy them online.

Lantern Tours
If you feel adventurous this weekend you can explore the underground caverns of Sulfur Mountain by candlelight. Parks Canada is now offering special after-dark tours of the Cave and Basin National Historic Site in Banff every Saturday evening from May to September. This is something that will appeal to everyone in your group. Tours last 30 minutes and you can join the staff for a viewing at 7pm or 8pm. Reservations are encouraged: 403-845-3524.

Friday/Saturday

Cooking Classes
Looking to spend some quality time with your main squeeze? The Cookbook Co. is offering a couples cooking class this Friday night with instructor Georgia Annis. From 6:30 to 9pm you’ll get to learn some useful tips and tricks in the kitchen while preparing a meal for two. How romantic! If you’re not currently attached but wouldn’t mind taking a class, you can also look into the Vietnamese and Thai classic courses being offered on Saturday. All three of these classes are $90 per person. Visit the main page for the full class schedule.

Friday/Saturday/Sunday

Get Your Tickets For The Sake Dinner
Ramen is the thing to eat in Calgary right now, and on June 3rd Goro + Gun is throwing their first big noodle party from 5 to 9 p.m. with Hakkaisan Sake. There will be a colourful five-course meal served while you get to check out a traditional samurai sword display, listen to some Japanese drumming, and witness the cracking of the sake barrel (a Japanese ritual for good luck). This event has everything! Tickets are $100 and well worth the cost of admission.
