Calgary Weekender: May 3 through 5, 2013

Friday
May 3 is Bike to Work day, so dust off your bike if you haven’t taken it out for the first ride of the season yet and use it as your mode of transportation to work. If you’re thinking of getting a new bike this year, consider Zak Pashak’s Detroit Bikes. Zak’s always one step ahead of the curve as the brainchild behind Vancouver’s Biltmore Cabaret and Calgary’s Broken City. “Like” their Facebook page and you can keep on top of the updates as they ramp up production this summer.

Chris Turner, who ran for the Green Party in the last federal by-election, is speaking about Making the Leap at the Golden Age Club in the East Village on Friday between 7pm and 10pm. Join in for the live music, networking and some inspiration. Tickets are $20.

Saturday
While DaneandJenn’s show the News From Here: The 2013 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art is on at the Art Gallery of Alberta until May 5, stop in at the Trepanier Baer Gallery to check out their current exhibition, Chris Cran: Candidates and Citizens. Chris is a painter who lives and works in Calgary and his work examines the relationship between representation and abstraction. Trepanier Baer is open until 5pm on Saturday. #105 – 999 8th Street SW

Fancy a day of beer drinking? Then head down to the BMO Centre for Calgary International Beerfest. With hundreds of beers to sample, you’re sure to find a new favourite for the upcoming summer while mingling with fellow beer lovers.

If you’re in the mood for some dancing Saturday night, head to Commonwealth Bar & Stage for Modern Vintage with DJ Ivan Rankic upstairs and Heebz downstairs. But if you’re counting down the days until Sled Island and want to get in on some local music action, get yourself to the Palomino for Sled’s Rock Fundraiser Lottery. Musicians from your favourite local bands are colliding to form five new bands who have 12 hours to come up with and perform new music. Look for members from the Dudes, Stalwart Sons and Faux Fur. Commonwealth Bar & Stage 731 10 Ave SW / The Palomino Smokehouse 109 7 Ave SW

Sunday
Cinco de Mayo! Celebrate Mexican heritage and pride either in or out. Invite your buddies over for a fiesta, but make your way to Salsita in the NW first and pick up some fresh mango salsa and pre-made tamales or chipotle chicken that you can just pop in the oven. If you want to head out for a Sunday Funday, head to Anejo on 4th Street in Mission. Anejo’s tacos and guac are the way to go. And be sure to try their special margarita, which has chilies and coconut milk, or the ginger version. Salsita, 777 Northmount Dr. NW / Anejo 216 4th Street SW
