Calgary Weekender: May 25 through 27, 2012

Friday brings the much-anticipated TEDxYYC. About 200 of the city’s influential YPs will be taking over Telus SPARK – The New Science Centre (220 St. George’s Drive NE) for this independently organized TEDx event. It will be a full day of talks about innovation and the future of our city through the lens of Technology, Entertainment and Design.

Want to keep the conversation going? TEDxYYC has partnered with the East Village and Sled Island for the official TEDxYYC After Party at the historic Simmons Building (Simmons Bldg 618 Confluence Way SE). From 7pm to 11pm, enjoy local musical acts, libations, and the YYC food trucks. Space is limited, so be sure to get there early.

Love jazz music? Well get ready for a weekend of tunes. The National Music Centre and The Banff Centre are launching the first annual National Jazz Summit. In celebration of Calgary’s designation as the 2012 Cultural Capital of Canada, the inaugural event brings together jazz musicians, educators and fans for a series of concerts and workshops being held at Theatre Junction Grand (608 1 St SW) and The National Music Centre (134, 11 Ave SE). Friday evening they will be bringing you The Big Show featuring Oliver Jones and The Invertigo Trio with very special guest Vijay Iyer at Theatre Junction Grand.

Saturday, The National Music Centre will be open for a full day of interactive and educational workshops for fans and musicians. As well, the RBC Summit Jazz Series featuring Sinistrio, DJ Rock and CK Sax and Ascend 3 Trio with special guests will be taking place in the evening.

Saturday morning we suggest you get up bright an early for another installment of Market Collective (148 -10th NW). Not your typical market, this community space showcases the work of local artists, artisans and musicians. Peruse the various booths and meet local members of the arts scene.

Saturday evening we think you need to check out the newly opened Sit, a pop-up space where YPs can purchase accessible, design-driven furniture and accessories, while also checking out work presented by artists and community builders. Saturday evening they will be hosting Hot One Inch Action, the original, one-night only show of button art and social interaction from Vancouver, BC. Check out the reproduced work of 50 ACAD artists and designers on one-inch buttons, which will be displayed on the walls like a gallery show. Love them? They will also be for sale.

Looking for more of a classical evening? The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra brings you Bach@Knox: The Bach Double. Enjoy this timeless music in the iconic Knox United Church (506 – 4th Street SW).

Sunday is a big day for the city’s running community as it is the annual Scotiabank Calgary Marathon. If you love going the distance, lace up your shoes and head down to Stampede Park (20 Roundup Way SE) at 7am for Alberta’s best road race – it’s also a Boston Marathon qualifier. More comfortable with a shorter distance? The race has been designed for everyone of any fitness level with multiple distances including marathon, half marathon, 10km, and a 5km walk/run.

Love festivals? Well Sunday is the 23rd annual 4th Street Lilac Festival happening along 13 blocks on 4th Street in the heart of the Mission district. Shop at over 500 craft, food and entertainment vendors. Or enjoy the food and beverages as you take in the entertainment featured on stages and entertainment zones throughout. The crowd will be big, so we suggest popping into any number of beer gardens that local restaurants and pubs will be hosting.

After a full day outside you’ll want to take it easy as you prepare for the week ahead. We think comfort food is just the ticket, so head to one of our favourite late-night diners for a well deserved meal with friends.
