Calgary Weekender: May 2 through 4, 2014

Is it a weekend of some of the world’s best beer you’re after? How about an endless supply of Cinco de Mayo party options turning a blind eye to the lime shortage? We’ve got all that as well as burgers, fundraisers and improv music all wrapped up in this edition of the Weekender…

Suds and Buds
Tell your friends! Calgary’s 10th annual International Beer Fest is happening this weekend and there will be over 700 beers for you to sample. The list of participating breweries is so long that it will make see you double before the drinking even begins. There will be lots of great food on site and seminars to attend if you are looking to learn a bit more about beer and brewing. Doors open at 4pm on Friday and 2pm on Saturday; tickets are $19 in advance and $25 at the door. If you visit the website you can also download a handy little app that will let you take tasting notes and keep you up to date on the seminar schedule. Bottoms up!

I’ll Take Fries With That…
YYC Burger Week starts this Saturday, and until May 10th you can try out a mouth-watering selection of burgers all over the city and then vote for your favourite. Looking at the list of competitors and what they’re cooking up this year is enough to make anyone’s stomach growl. The Samurai Ahi Tuna burger from Billingsgate Seafood sounds incredible and Craft’s Brant Lake Wagyu Beef burger is another one you won’t want to miss trying. Walking The Red Carpet For Kids
The Paying It Forward event is happening this weekend and this is your chance to support The Children’s Cottage Society, an organization that ensures our little ones have a safe place to call home and all the support they need to have a happy normal childhood.  The Gerry Thomas Gallery (602 11th Avenue SW) is hosting the event, which will feature drinks, tapas, a silent auction and a few Flames and Stampeders making appearances throughout the evening. Tickets are $50 and $65 will get you VIP.

Sombrero Time
We’re not going to let a serious shortage of limes dampen our favourite Mexican celebration. Start celebrating Cinco de Mayo this weekend at one of the many bars, restaurants and cantinas in the city. You have Los Chilitos on 17th, Salt and Pepper in Inglewood, Julio Barrio’s in Kensington and Anejo in Mission to choose from if you’re looking for a margarita… or two. Contemporary Calgary is also throwing a party in partnership with the Mexican Consulate of Calgary at the new gallery space. Tickets are $75 and include a BBQ, piñata smashing and lots of fun festivities.

Sled Island Rock Lottery
The Sled lsland Rock Lottery is happening on Saturday. This is all you need to know: 25 super stellar musicians from Calgary will be entered in a draw, and as names are randomly pulled new bands will be formed for a special one night performance the following night. Once the lottery is complete, each new band will have 12 hours to come up with songs and you just never know what to expect up on stage. All the spontaneous fun goes down at the Palomino at 8pm.

Drawing Party
Quickdraw Animation is hosting their 30th Anniversary Party at Tubby Dog this Sunday afternoon. From 2pm to 5pm you are invited to learn more about what’s in store for the rest of 2014 and the programming coming in 2015. To add to the celebratory mood you’ll get to enjoy cake, live music from Harry Muscles and Hex Ray, and there might even be a few new cartoons being screened. There are also rumors of a piñata being strung up, so if you missed out on Cinco de Mayo this weekend this is your chance!
