Calgary Weekender: March 15 through 17, 2013

Friday night we suggest checking out the newly-opened Xocolat. Serving up posh Mexican cuisine, Xocolat recently opened its doors in the heart of Calgary’s Design District (816 11th Avenue SW). Owned and operated by Mexican entrepreneurs, the team strongly believes that Mexican gastronomy is an art to be appreciated and understood outside of Mexico. Open late, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Saturday afternoon, find out how high tea and high fashion come together at Cork & Canvas Festival: High Tea in Style. Put on by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, this elegant afternoon affair will take over the Fairmont Palliser (133 9 Ave SW). Put on your finest hat, fancy gloves and stylish shoes and join the fashion parade.

For those who love to support local artists, why not check out the opening reception of Kat Garland’s new works, “Coat of Arms,” at the Haight Gallery (2018 24 Ave NE).

For those who have not had a chance to check it out yet, the International Festival of Animated Objects is still taking place this weekend. Calgary’s 10-year-old International Festival of Animated Object brings you more than 80 artists from around the world who will descend on Inglewood from March 9 to 17. A mix of acclaimed international artists and some of the rising stars of Calgary’s own artistic community converge for more than 30 events, including theatre shows, workshops, exhibitions and screenings.

Sunday brings you St. Patrick’s Day. For the athletes out there, The Original St. Patrick’s Day Road Race will kick off at 9am at Central Memorial High School?(5111 21 St. SW). Run either a 5-km or 10-km race and enjoy the post-race celebration/awards ceremonies at the Central Memorial gymnasium.

Of course many of the city’s pubs will be bustling with YPs ready to celebrate St. Patrick as well. No matter where you decide to indulge in a pint, be sure to get there early as many places will be bumping with Celtic tunes throughout the day. We suggest checking out Ceili’s, Craft Beer Market or any number of local pubs and watering holes.

Looking for something a little different? Why not indulge in the Top Chef Collaborative Dinner at MARKET. Join Geoff Rogers, a “Top Chef” season three competitor and executive chef of MARKET, and runner-up from season two Trevor Bird, at MARKET (718 17 Ave SW) for a collaborative, family-style dinner. Indulge in a five-course meal with carefully chosen wine, beer and cocktail pairings as you enjoy “Top Chef” season two highlights playing on TVs throughout the restaurant.
