Calgary Weekender: June 6 through 8, 2014

Friday/Saturday/Sunday

Time for Bocce
You’ve probably noticed the little green car parked on the sidewalk in Mission for the last month. The corner of 4th Street and 22nd Avenue is now home to the new restaurant known as Bocce, the sister restaurant to the upscale Italian market across the road. Like Mercato, this new eatery will share a high quality menu with its patrons but the bill here will be a little easier on the wallet. Many items are under $20 and you can always grab stuff to go. Now that’s amore!

Celebrate Negroni Week
This is your chance to enjoy a refreshing gin-infused cocktail while doing your part to help out the community. June 2nd to 8th is Negroni Week around the world and Cilantro will be the best spot to imbibe this weekend with 5 out of 6 cocktails being Negroni-inspired. For every drink sold, the restaurant will be donating $1 towards the Mustard Seed. While you might be in a hurry to get your drink on at Cilantro (and do your good deed), we would still recommend making a reservation.

Your Newest Party App
Stampede just gets more and more exciting. William Shatner has just been announced as the parade marshall and the new stmpdr site has just launched. We’re sure Captain Kirk is a blast to hang out with, but stmpdr is probably going to be your best friend during the crazy cowboy extravaganza we know as the Calgary Stampede. This will be the very go-to resource for all the shows, events and parties happening. Right now you also have the chance to win two free tickets to the Badlands Music Festival by sharing your love/hate relationship with Stampede week on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Just make sure to include the hashtags #Badlands2014 and #stmpdr.

Saturday

Undress to Impress
If you and your friends are looking for something fun to do this weekend, it’s not too late to register in the Underwear Affair, a fun and traffic-stopping race to raise money for the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Because this particular race is all about curing cancer below the belt, all participants will be running or walking the 5 or 10-km circuit in their undies. You can still catch the walk even if you’re not participating, which will be winding through the Kensington district.

Sunday

Luke’s is Having a Party
Brigeland’s favourite drug mart is throwing a party from noon to 5pm this Sunday. Partnering with Sled Island, this will be the 2nd annual pre-festival party for all ages. Canadian hip-hop superstar Shad will be the main attraction at the concert with Dead Soft out of Vancouver and local group Night Committee also in attendance. Luke’s Drug Mart is located at 112 4th Street NE)and is the best spot in the North East for Stumptown coffee and a great record collection.

Axe Capoeria
Brazil has no shortage of interesting culture, and thanks to this country we have Pele, teeny bikinis, Samba and more. On June 8th you can check out the exciting showcase of Capoeria dance happening at the EPCOR’s Engineered Air Theatre. Brazil’s legendary dance is a crazy mix of acrobatics and rhythm that will keep you enthralled. To keep with the theme, Gaucho’s Brazilian BBQ is a great place to grab dinner following the event.
