Calgary Weekender: June 13 through 15, 2014

Friday

Make time for TED
The 5th Annual TEDxYYC is taking place on June 13th at the Jubilee Auditorium and you’re invited. TED events are all about ideas worth spreading and TEDxYYC’s theme this year is contagious inspiration. In recent years TEDxYYC featured diverse speakers including the CEO of the Barbican Arts Centre in the UK, Sir Nicholas Kenyon, Paralympic medalist and sit-skiier Josh Dueck, and children’s folk singer and Canadian icon Raffi. The topics for 2014 will include sustainability, education, technology, arts and culture to promote conversation, action and cooperation in our community.

The Continental
Nothing makes you feel dandier than a day at Spruce Meadows, so get ready for a grand weekend of equestrian-style fun. The FEI CSIO 5-star Tournament is on from the 12th to the 15th during which guests will get to experience world-class show jumping. This will be the only horse event like this happening in Canada this summer. Right now Notable.ca is giving away two free tickets to Friday night’s competition and you really won’t want to pass us this fabulous experience. E-mail Caitlinb@notable.ca for your chance to win great seats.

Saturday

Get Kara Moving
Here’s an inspirational story: During a routine climb last summer, a young woman tragically fell 20 feet, a fall that left her paralyzed from the waist down. As a testament to her spirit, she has taken on High Performance Cycling only a year after her tragic accident, a remarkable feat considering that she was told she’d never walk again. A silent auction and fundraiser is being held in her honour this weekend, so come out and celebrate her strength and courage while hearing from ultra marathon runner Adam Campbell, Paralympic cycling coach Stephen Burke, and former Paralympian Steve Ellefson. Visit the website to purchase your ticket and learn more about Kara’s story.

Saturday/Sunday

Bison Noir
Honens has invited a very funky Paris electro group to Calgary to play their very first Canadian shows, which are happening over the weekend. Presented by Hinrich Alpers, Cabaret Contemporain will be a sonic spectacle that revisits compositions by famous composer John Cage. Inspired by New York’s Le Poisson Rouge club, Honens fuses classical and post-classical in an untraditional setting that is meant to make this genre of music more approachable. Tickets are $25 each.

Sunday

Father’s Day
Dads are awesome and this Sunday you should make sure that you celebrate yours by doing something thoughtful. You can always play a round of golf and swing your rackets on the tennis court, or you can treat your pops to a brunch buffet at Craft Beer Market between 10am and 3pm. There will be a hearty selection of breakfast and lunch items to go with over 100 beers on tap and the whole family can join. To be on the safe side, you should really make a reservation.

Tea Party at The Palliser
On June 15th the Fairmont Palliser Hotel celebrates its centennial with a grand afternoon celebration on 9th Avenue SW. This is a free event and everyone is welcome. The soiree begins at 2pm and you’ll be able to enjoy the ribbon cutting ceremony to the main entrance followed by a birthday cake and tea service. There will also be music from the Summit Big Band. The Fairmont is one of the oldest and most exquisite buildings in our downtown, so make sure you’re there to help celebrate a piece of Calgary heritage.
