Calgary Weekender: July 6 through 8, 2012

This weekend is clearly abuzz with Stampede excitement. How could it not be with this year being the Centennial Stampede? With that brings a plethora of events, activities and parties for Calgary young professionals. To even out the weekend, there are also some alternatives for you to check out.

Friday officially kicks off Stampede. Head downtown bright and early (we’re talking 7:30 am) to get a seat along the parade route – there is general seating available on a first come first serve basis along 6 Ave and 9 Ave. While waiting for the parade to start, you can enjoy the Parade Prelude, on-street entertainment starting at 7:30 am. The parade itself is going to be a spectacular show with plenty of horses, intricate floats and marching bands to get your boots tappin’.

For those who don’t have corporate events to attend, we suggest heading down to one of the tents – Wildhorse (500 6 Ave SW) or Cowboys (42112th Ave. SE) are great spots – to take part in the First Friday festivities, including live music and entertainment. Both promise to be jammed with YPs sporting cowboy hats and boots.

When hunger strikes head over to Vintage Chophouse for a steak. They’re known throughout the city for them. Don’t forget to speak with their sommelier who can help you pair dinner with a great bottle of wine.

Saturday, grab some friends and head down to East Village for the East Village Vintage Sale. They are joining in on the Stampede spirit and will be hosting their inaugural Stampede Breakfast on RiverWalk from 9:00-10:00am. In addition, they will be celebrating the 100th birthday of the Simmons Building (618 Confluence Way) with a Vintage in the Village market. Vendors, including Thrifty Cowgirl, Bug & Bird, Honey B’s, Mod Magpie and Cat’s Eye Vintage will feature everything from vintage clothing and jewelry, to toys, quilts, antiques, furniture and art.

After, walk over to the Stampede Grounds (20 Roundup Way SE) to check out what it is that makes The Calgary Stampede the greatest outdoor show on earth. Check out the rodeo and see some of the world’s best athletes as they compete. Or channel your inner-child and take part in the mid-way fun. Planning on staying all day? Canadian country superstar Paul Brandt will be performing alongside The Young Canadians for the much anticipated Grandstand Show (which will be happening each night). Of course, no day at the Stampede is complete without watching the fireworks.

Sunday you are off to Eau Claire (201 Barclay Parade SW) to check out the Calgary Turkish Festival. Taking place all weekend from 9am to 9pm daily, you can catch various performances including whirling dervishes, or peruse the booths full of Turkish products, souvenirs and handcrafts. Don’t forget to sample some delicious Turkish cuisine.
