Calgary Weekender: July 4 through 6, 2014

Friday

BIG Stmpdr Social
After the parade wraps on Friday you can head over to the Ramsay Design Centre (1900 11 Street SE) for the Stmpdr BIG Social that’s celebrating everything Stampede. The afternoon will be full of good people, good music and, most importantly, good food. This event is free and happens from 1pm to 6pm. Nothing beats a good old parking lot party, especially when there’s no charge. If you’re looking for landmarks, the Barre Studio and The Commons are located in the Ramsey Design Centre.

Free Pour
On July 4th the Free Pour Cocktail Party is taking place in the historic building that now houses the Theatre Junction Grand. To complement the atmosphere of the venue, BassBus will be serving a variety of old-time libations from two different bars: one on the main level and one on the top floor, where guests can hang out and view all the entertainment below.  And, of course, a Bassbus evening wouldn’t complete without some funky  music. Montreal DJ and producer Goopsteppa will be spinning along with three other local acts. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door.

Friday/Saturday/Sunday

Badlands
It’s about to get crazy with a capital ‘C’ this weekend when the 2014 Badlands Music Festival comes to life at Canada Olympic Park. All weekend you’ll have the chance to see big names on the electronic festival circuit. Duck Sauce, Bloody Beetroots, Dada Life and Glitch Mob will be headlining this year with appearances from DVBBS, GTA and The ChainSmokers. Doesn’t that sound better than listening to Shania Twain on repeat this weekend? For tickets and information on the line-up, you can visit the Badlands website.

Chinese Acrobatics
This year the ENMAX Corral Show is featuring something a little different. On Friday and Sunday you’ll get the opportunity to see world-class performances from the Peking Acrobats. Touring all over the world, this talented troupe of tumblers, jugglers and gymnasts has performed sold out shows everywhere. Audiences will be amazed with their nimble moves. After watching the show, bullriding will look like a walk in the park. Check the website for show times as they happen several times a day. This event is free with the cost of admission to the grounds.

Get Your Tickets!
If you haven’t made plans for July 9th, Vine Styles is throwing a very special kind of Stampede wine tasting called the Half Classy Wine Party. During Stampede, people are always drinking beer… but who says you can’t keep it classy and start the night off with a little vino? The shop will be pouring a fun selection of cowboy wines that pair with Western-inspired treats like BBQ ribs and coleslaw. Yum! Tickets are only  $35 (which makes this the most reasonable wine tasting you’ll find this month). Be there from 6 to 8pm to get primed for your next big event.

Sunday

Brunch at NOtaBLE
If you’re looking for a leisurely place to spend Sunday, NOtaBLE Restaurant in the Bowness community has a great brunch that starts at 11am. While this establishment may be a little out of the way for some of us, the food is definitely worth the trip. The banana bread panini with grilled banana, pineapple compote dark rum, lemon and fresh berries is a good option for anyone who loves a decadent breakfast. You can find the full menu and contact information to make a reservation here.
