Calgary Weekender: July 25 through 27, 2014

Friday

Your Last Chance for New Art
Artpoint Gallery has asked a colourful cross section of Calgarians to paint 5×7 canvases to raise money for local art projects, which will be on display until July 25th. The works you’ll see have been rendered by a wide variety of people, some who have painted for years and others who might not have made it past kindergarten yet. All art on display can be purchased for $99 per canvas and will be a lovely addition to any room in your house.

Saturday

Zombie Survival
Here’s a totally terrifying way to start your Saturday: The annual Zombie Run is taking place on July 26th in Cochrane and will be one one of the most bizarre 5k runs you’ll ever do. The object of the game is to avoid all the undead who will be roaming the running course and trying to get a hold of all your flags. For more information on shuttles, parking and what you’ll need in your survivor kit, you should read through the website. For a small price you can also show up and watch the fun from afar. Bring popcorn!

Elevated Etiquette
Been to Cafe Koi lately? Located on 1st Street SW, this little eatery is a great spot for healthy lunches during the regular hours of business downtown… but many of us forget  this small little Cafe has great ambiance at night time too. On July 26th the Freestylimics are hosting a special night of hip-hop so stop by around 10pm and switch up your evening with a few drinks and a little freestyle.

Friday/Saturday/Sunday

Get Your Tickets!
The Bourbon Room is now hosting cocktail classes and you can take part in the next one that’s happening on July 29th. This is a great way to learn a little something about making classic cocktails while enjoying a great venue. For $75 you’ll get to learn a few bar tricks with the pros and try a few delicious cocktails in a fun and intimate setting. Seats are very limited for these evenings, so buy your tickets this weekend and maybe practice mixing one or two drinks at home as a warm up.

Folk Fest is Finally Here.
Get ready for an exciting four-day weekend of folk music and more. Hopefully you took our advice last week and made your schedule of performances that you’d like to see because there are so many great artists and acts to choose from in 2014. Start your day off right with a hearty brunch at River Cafe and then plan to take advantage of the afternoon shows and the delicious sangria being served on-site. If you haven’t got around to purchasing tickets yet, you can still find them on the Folk Festival website.

You Scream, I Scream
If you’re looking to have a lazy weekend, then why not enjoy one of the simple delights that come with summertime and nice weather? Make it an ice cream day. Grab your 10-speed or your skateboard and head to Village Ice Cream (located at 431 10th Avenue SE) where you can sample your frozen treat on a sunny patio. If you just can’t decide what to order, don’t overlook the toasted coconut or salted caramel as options. It will be the best thing you eat all week.
