Calgary Weekender: July 11 through 13, 2014

Friday/Saturday/Sunday

Last Chance to Stampede
This is your last chance to take advantage of everything Stampede. This weekend we suggest you buy admission to the grounds so you can sample the foods, shop at the CS Merchantile booth and catch some of the Wild West entertainment like the chuck wagon races or the rodeo events. The cost of admission also gets you access to some pretty big names at the Coca Cola stage. This weekend alone you can catch DJ sets by the Beat Drop crew and evening performances with the Trews and Billy Talent. Did we mention there are lots of fireworks?

The New Container Bar
There is no shortage of amazing patios popping up this summer, but thanks to Brasserie in Kensington we’ll soon have our very first container bar. Created with a shipping container in a narrow back alley, this little watering hole is sure to be one of the go-to spots when the weather is in our favour. The Container Bar is planning to open its doors this weekend so tell all your friends to head to this great new spot and be the first ones to try it out.

Friday

The Stomp Is Back
The Oxford Stomp is happening at Fort Calgary this Friday and is sure to be a packed event. This year the headliners include Our Lady Peace, Life House and Rob Thomas. The cost of admission includes transportation from downtown and you’re also invited to join the after party at the Roadhouse. Doors open at 3pm and performances run until 10pm. If you don’t make it to the Roadhouse, you can guarantee that pretty much every other bar in the area is going to have something going on. Cowboys and Vagabond would be just a short walk from Fort Calgary.

Saturday

Get Funky
Get down with Goodfoot on July 12th at the Ironwood Bar. Stampede is just about over and this will be a welcome change for folks who’ve had a little bit too much fun on the festival grounds and in the tents. Goodfoot brings some serious funk with a horn section, an engaging stage presence and jams that will get you grooving. Tickets are $15 at the door; make sure to arrive for 9pm. The Ironwood is also a great option for grabbing dinner or a snack before things get too crazy.

Beatles Anyone?
If you plan to be out in the mountains this weekend, then you might want to consider being in Banff for Saturday night. The quartet known as the Art Of Time Ensemble will be playing Beatles tunes from the album SGT. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band.  You’ll love hearing the classic songs that are being re-imagined by former members of the Barenaked Ladies, Spirit of the West and the Skydiggers. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased online. Gates to the Shaw Amphitheatre will be opening at 5:30pm.

Sunday

One Last Hurrah
Congratulations, you’ve survived another Stampede! If you plan to go out with a bang then consider heading to the tacky cowboy shirt party at Ranchman’s on Sunday night. Dig out your most colourful, embellished and ridiculous shirts that you can find and get ready to party one last time. This is a mix and mingle affair that will have plenty of pro rodeo stars in attendance, so have a few drinks, meet a few a cowboys, and strut in that tassle shirt you’ve been looking to wear out.
