Calgary Weekender: January 29 to February 1, 2015

Walrus Talks, a play inspired by Kief, the opening of two decadently delicious new restaurants, and more than a few drinking themed events.

The next four days seem to have a consistent theme of vice.

Sounds perfect, right?

After all, it is the weekend.

THURSDAY

Tonight is Last Best Brewery’s charity launch at Midtown Restaurant. To celebrate the occasion, the new brewers will be presenting a special Imperial IPA with proceeds going to charity.

High Performance Rodeo is winding down this weekend but before it does, you have the chance to check out some pretty hilarious acts like the Keith Richards One-Woman- Show. Performed at the #1 Legion, this show will make you appreciate all the wacky antics associated with one of the greatest musicians ever.

And anyone who wants to explore the subject of vice will want to see the Walrus Talks that’s focusing on that sinful subject as part of the 2015 presentation. With Ashley Madison’s Noel Biderman in town, things are bound to get weird.

FRIDAY

Rodney’s Oyster House is now open! Treat yourself to some oysters and seafood for dinner before starting your evening.

Decidedly Jazz presents Borderline this weekend at the Arrata Opera Centre. It’s experimental dance, so don’t forget to bring an open mind.

Into wine? Get tickets to the Food and Beverage Show happening at the Winter Club. With an ‘under the big top’ theme, there will be a touch of circus to the evening and lots of entertainment between sips of vino.

SATURDAY

Speaking of restaurant openings, Starbelly has also opened for business and is making residents of the Seton neighbourhood smile. Bringing culinary greatness to southern Calgary, this place is worth the trip when time permits. Go for the root beer French toast.

This weekend, the Glenbow’s Oh Canada exhibit is having their opening party. Going beyond your typical genre of national landscapes, this exhibit should not be missed.

If you didn’t get your fill of wine on Friday night, Wine Stage happens at Heritage Park on Saturday night. Showcasing some of the city’s top wine boutiques and a stellar selection of reds and whites, Wine Stage never disappoints.

SUNDAY

The month of February is YYC Hot Chocolate Fest, which means Cafes and restaurants all over town are selling specialty cups of cocoa. Skip the latte run this weekend and order a hot chocolate instead.

Just a little thing we like to call the Super Bowl. The W XYZ bar in Aloft Calgary will be the ideal place to post up for a few hours. With beer on special all day, you’ll feel like you’re winning – even if your team isn’t.

Last but not least, winter cyclists should spend the weekend tuning up their bikes. It might be the end of January but Cyclepalooza is hosting the wickedly fun winter bike festival Winterpalooza in early February. Opt for a tune up now to avoid missing out.
