Calgary Weekender: January 18 through 20, 2013

The chinooks have been hitting the city this whole week and, as temperatures increase, so does the number of people on the streets. This weekend there are all sorts of things happening to get you out of the house and getting social.

If you love fine Cognac, then you have to attend Hennessy’s ‘Global Art of Mixing’ Friday night. Part of the Hennessy artistry club series, this is the inaugural edition for Calgary. The evening will feature DJ/Producer duo Kyau & Albert in addition to the cutting edge sounds of Stoneface & Terminal at Flames Central. Experience an electrifying night.

If you love Beethoven, The Calgary Philharmonic is showcasing two performances of Anton Kuerti’s Beethoven. Anton Kuerti’s interpretations of Beethoven’s piano concertos have set the benchmark towards which many pianists strive. Hear him perform the stirring Second Concerto alongside the gorgeous melodies of the Orchestra in Rachmaninoff’s gloriously Russian Third Symphony

If you haven’t had a chance to catch a show within High Performance Rodeo yet this month, take advantage this weekend. One we are particularly interested in is Up Close. Featuring Alberta Ballet’s full company of thirty-one dancers, it is comprised of three innovative programs choreographed by Yukichi Hattori, Alexandrous Ballard, and Calgary’s own Denise Clarke.

Saturday, we suggest checking out the performance ‘Look Mummy, I’m Dancing‘. The story is about a transsexual woman who slowly but resolutely peels off her sixty-year-old skin until you are face to face with the reverse side of her soul. Featuring Belgian artist Vanessa Van Durme, this monologue is a confrontational and moving lament on one person’s struggle for simple happiness and it leaves a lasting impression.

Saturday evening we suggest all the DJ lovers head back to Flames Central to catch a DJ performance by TyDi. An internationally touring artist, he’s bringing his world-renowned sound to Calgary. Having headlined shows and festivals all over the world, he has performed for crowds as big as 40,000.

And don’t forget about Chinese New Year! Ring in the Year of the Snake at the 2013 Chinese New Year Gala Saturday evening. Hosted by the Calgary Chinese Arts Association, it will take place at the Jubilee Auditorium. Enjoy Folk Dances,? Latin Dances, Tai Chi, Kungfu ?Classic, Vocalists, ?Beijing Opera, the ?Chinese Music Orchestra and so much more.
