Calgary Weekender: January 17 through 19, 2014

Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Romeo and Juliet
Boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, then boy and girl express their passionate love through dance. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet presents the love story of Romeo and Juliet this weekend. You’ll be transported back to Verona in the 16th century and be entertained by the wonderful choreography, the music from the Winnipeg Orchestra and the drama of this tragic love story. This could be a great early Valentine’s Day surprise if you’re trying to think outside the box this year.

Friday

Keith Urban
Keith Urban hits the Saddledome later this month. Hailing from Australia, Urban has made a big impression on North American country music fans. While Urban has countless hits, he is probably best known for his work on the incredibly popular shows The Voice and American Idol. If you like country and want to see a high voltage show, then you won’t want to miss Urban’s Calgary performance. The Vagabond Brewery is less than a five-minute walk from the Saddledome if you’re looking for a little post-concert fun (1129 Olympic Way SE)

Saturday

Ice Climbing
On Saturday, you can experience a world of adventure right on the 200 block of Banff Avenue. As part of SnowDays, Yamnuska Mountain Adventures and Banff Tourism are erecting an impressive 40-foot wall of ice for people to try ice climbing. This is your chance to try some extreme winter sports with way less risk and your hotel close by. Yamnuska Mountain Adventure will provide the equipment and instruction. The cost is $10 for everyone over 13 years of age.

Friday and Saturday

Young Drunk Punk
Bruce McCulloch is a comedian, writer and director who is best known for his work on the iconic Canadian show Kids in the Hall. McCulloch’s new solo show, Young Drunk Punk, combines his stand-up comedy, music and a few entertaining anecdotes from his life. McCulloch will make you laugh with his tale of transformation from a punk living in Alberta in the 80s, to his days in Toronto on Kids in the Hall, to his current post as a dad who lives in Los Angeles and rarely changes out of his PJs. Tickets are $32 and the show starts at 8pm.

Saturday and Sunday

Kids Ski For Free
FIS World Snow Day is part of an international campaign to get kids into snow sport within their country. This year Sunshine Village is celebrating World Snow Day by offering kids under the age of 12 free skiing on the 18th and 19th of January. Whether your kids are seasoned skiers or just beginning, this is a great chance to get out to the mountains and enjoy a day with the family. The day lodge just off the gondola offers lots of hot meals and drinks when you need to take a break and warm up – a given, of course.

Sunday

Neil Young and Dianna Krall
One of Canada’s most legendary musicians will be in town on Sunday night to perform a special concert with another amazing Canadian and jazz vocalist. Neil Young and Dianna Krall are playing a series of benefit shows across the country to raise awareness about the future development of Alberta oil sands. Proceeds from the ‘Honour the Treaties’ benefit shows will be going to support the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nations in their mission to ensure ethical oil sands development in the Athabasca area.
