Calgary Weekender: January 13 through 15, 2012

It may be Friday the 13th this weekend, but that isn’t holding us back from taking advantage of an action-packed weekend. There is all kinds of stuff happening in Calgary to keep any kind of young professional busy and excited.

Enroute to whatever fabulous event you have planned, we suggest making a detour to Olympic Plaza for Limelight, a public art installation. Artistic duo Sans façon have replaced two existing street lights with theatre spotlights, inviting you, the passer-by, to seize a moment in the limelight and unleash your inner performer.

High Performance Rodeo is in full swing. In addition to Limelight, there is a fantastic line-up of great performances and shows worth checking out throughout the weekend. For full listings and information, click here.

If live music is more your scene, then Beatniq is definitely something you are going to want to visit this weekend. Friday and Saturday evening will bring performances by Rubim de Toledo. Come down and take part in a tribute to Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew. Bitches Brew was Davis’ first gold record, and sold half a million copies; it received mixed responses, because of the album’s unconventional style and revolutionary sound. Later, Bitches Brew gained recognition as one of jazz’s greatest albums and became a huge influence on the jazz-rock and jazz-fusion genres. Doors open at 8pm, and the show begins at 9pm.

For the YPs who love a good breakfast, Saturday morning you are in for a treat. Borgo Trattoria is now offering a full brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays. We suggest the broiled, thin-sliced beef tenderloin and truffled eggs & crispy speck proscuitto.

After satisfying your hunger with a perfect Italian breakfast, why not head to the BMO Centre for 40th Annual Calgary’s Home Expo taking place January 13-15. This year will bring 300 exhibitors along with special guests Sarah Richardson (HGTV’s Sarah’s House), Andre Downward (HGTV’s Divine Design), and John Sillaots (one of Canada’s expert “Home Improvement Specialists”).

Of course after a full day of Expo you may want to unwind with a beverage. Head to Lounge Burger for a pint and gourmet burger as you go over all the home renovation ideas you’ve collected.

Saturday evening is an evening of musical genius. The CPO will be performing Movie Masterpieces: The Classics of John Williams. Some of the greatest symphonic music of our time has come from the world of film, and John Williams – the “king of the film score” – is one of today’s greatest classical composers. Musical scores from Jaws, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Superman, as well as the heart-wrenching violin solo from Schindler’s List, are featured on this concert of cinematic classics.

We all know that this time of year is also bridal fair season. Sunday for all those brides-to-be there is the Bridal Fantasy Fair at the Telus Convention Centre. There will be a fashion show and the latest trends in flowers, tuxedos, gowns, destination wear, hair and make-up. In addition there are over $75,000 in prizes.

Looking to get out of the city for the day? Why not head to Bragg Creek and take advantage of any number of the winter-friendly hiking trails.
