Calgary Weekender: February 5 through 8, 2015

This has been a pretty fantastic week for Calgary.

Nenshi was just named the world’s best mayor and now we’ve got the annual Schmancy party along with some pretty stylish pop-up shops to look forward to; not to mention a new spot for speakeasy drinks.

Let’s start talking about how you’re spending your weekend.

THURSDAY

Get your wine on tonight at J Webb Wine Merchants. Their Stylish Boots tasting will take you around the heart of Italy in under 2 hours – exactly the kind of efficiency you wouldn’t actually find on the boot.

Now open for speakeasy Thursdays, this is your chance to access the coolest room in Calgary for some Model Milk inspired cocktails. Head to PDR after 9:30pm and don’t worry, there’s no password required. For more details on this secretive social hour spot, just call Model Milk (403-265-7343).

Village Brewery has just released their latest beer and it’s perfect for drinking this time of the year. The Undertaker is a dark Saison ale and is just what you need to ease into the end of the workweek. These beers taste just as good on the couch as they do at the bar so tweet @VillageBrewery to find out where you can buy this fancy new craft beer.

FRIDAY

Exposure Film Festival is now on and celebrates the brilliant photographers in the province with gallery shows and exhibitions across Calgary, Edmonton, Banff, and Canmore. Take a break from selfies and check out the some stunning photography.

On Friday night you can enjoy some improv with the comedy troupe The Kinkonauts. Bringing the unexpected to theatre, this group of actors are famous for performing without knowing their lines or the lyrics to the songs they perform. You just never know what you’re going to get.

Sometimes you just don’t feel like being fancy, and that’s ok. If you’re looking to keep it casual tonight, grab a booth at Broken City. It will only be a matter of time before DJ Pump lures you onto the dance floor.

SATURDAY

If you’re aspiring to be more of a chef in your own kitchen, start with a class in croissant making at Cuisine and Chateau.

Calling all men in need of a fashion update. NAQP, Understudy, Modern Menswear, and Group Seven are hosting a weekend long sale at Hotel Arts. From 11am to 6pm you can show up, shop and maybe stay for a cocktail at the hotel. Sounds like a pretty good way to spend your Saturday afternoon.

The long awaited Schmancy party is here and it’s going to be the wildest museum experience you’ve ever had. With big name acts, roving candy bars, and some truly remarkable Canadian art, this is where everyone should spend their night. The dress code is calling for over-the-top, so don’t hold back on every fashion statement you’ve ever wanted to make.

SUNDAY

Sometimes it’s fun to pretend you’re a kid again and that’s why you’re going to get excited about the TELUS Spark exhibit that features 14 life-size kinetic sculptures made from recycled steel that replicate dinosaur fossils. If you get stuck babysitting this weekend, at least both parties will have fun.

Anyone in the mood to shop will want to hit the Pop Up Shop, a fun initiative that brings all the good stuff together. A collaboration amongst designers and boutiques, here you’ll find cool fashion, art, and beauty brands that you love. Hit the pop-up Sunday between noon and 4pm.

The Philadelphia Story is now playing at the Epcor Centre with an evening performance on Sunday at 7:30pm. Based on the Oscar nominated film, the story follows Tracy Lord, a bride to be who just can’t stay focused on her nuptials when a reporter comes into her life. This play is great play to see with friends, family, or on a date. Just don’t take anyone with wedding jitters…
