The 2014 motionball Gala takes place on February 28th and this year the theme is ‘Brighter’, where everyone is encouraged to get dressed up to the nines in bright and flashy colours. This gala is something that should be on every young professional’s radar since you’ll have the chance to network while supporting a fantastic cause. The reception begins at 7:30pm followed by a fashion show and entertainment by DJ Skratch Bastid and DJ Rhyno.
Guilty Reading Pleasures
The Writer’s Guild of Alberta, Wordfest and Shelf Life Books present an evening of entertaining storytelling and wine to celebrate Freedom to Read Week. Multimedia artist Jeff de Boer along with authors Christian Bök and Rosemary Griebel will be in attendance to share their guilty reading pleasures. Shelley Youngblut, the beneficiary of the Freedom to Read Award for 2014, will be hosting the event. Guilty Reading Pleasures is free but you must RSVP.
Exposure Film Fest
This is your last opportunity to check out the Exposure Photography Festival that has treated Banff and Calgary to a series of wonderful photo exhibits and events over the last month. The closing party will be taking place at Endeavour Art Gallery on 1st Street SW and will begin at 7pm. This party will mark the end of another great festival year. During the evening, VISTEK will announce the winners of this year’s people’s choice award, the emerging photographer showcase winner and the runner up.
On Saturday you’ll have the chance to hear tracks from Locomotive Ghost’s latest album Winter, the final album of the group’s seasonally themed anthology. Locomotive Ghost has released four albums in the last year (no small undertaking) and they are quickly gaining recognition. Audiences will also be treated to beautiful installations by artist Rachelle Quinn. Tickets are $20 and the event will begin at 7:30 pm. The Big Secret Theatre is located at 205 8th Ave. S.E.
Home and Garden Show
The Calgary Home and Garden Show is back. This is a great event for anyone looking to make home improvements or take on new yard projects. This year, Bryan Baeumler, Tommy Smythe and 650 other exhibitors will be on site to discuss a variety of subject matter. This will also be the first year that garden gnomes will be featured in the show, so be sure to check out the Better Gnomes and Garden project. Organizers are so sure that you’ll love this show that anyone who isn’t satisfied will be offered a full refund.
If you’re feeling crafty this weekend, you should check out the photogram workshop offered through The Untitled Art Society. You’ll learn a short history behind a process that has been around since the 1800s, a process that was made famous by artists like Man Ray and Pablo Picasso. Everyone is encouraged to bring an assortment of material to use for their prints. The class will be lead by Hakan Temucin, whose photography has been displayed internationally.
