Calgary Weekender: February 21 through 23, 2014

Friday

A Mighty Wind
Spend Friday evening enjoying a movie and pretending you are outside in the middle of summer. Pull up a chair or lounge on a tarp at Festival Hall and enjoy a screening of A Mighty Wind, a charming mockumentary about an oddball trio of 1960s folk musicians preparing for a performance to honour a late friend. This is one of Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy’s funniest performances. Show begins at 7pm. If you have time before the screening, stop at Gravity Espresso & Wine Bar for a snack and a beer. Tickets are $10.

Friday/Saturday

Alexis: A Greek Tragedy
This is the story of Alexis, who was killed by police in questionable circumstances in 2008, an event that led to student rioting in Athens. The Italian theatre company Motus retells this tragic tale and draw the comparisons between this character and Antigone, a story of revolt in the modern age. Theatre Junction always presents show of great interest and depth that appeal to a wide range of audiences. On Friday evening, there will be an artist talk back following the performance.

The Surrogate
Have you ever had that heavy feeling in your chest when you think of family time? Are you sick of your dramatic great aunt or your irritating sister? The Surrogate explores the wacky idea of sending a surrogate in your place. You’ll hear the story of Samantha, a recent divorcee who sends a surrogate to her family dinner to shake things up. February 22nd is your last chance to see The Surrogate. Check the website for show times. Tickets are $22.

Rock(ed) Music Photography
As part of the Exposure Photography Festival, Art Central has opened up a pop-up gallery as an extension of the Glenbow to showcase a brilliant collection of photos from local photographer Zoltan Varadi. You’ll be delighted to see photos of Feist, Sloan, SNFU and lots of other memorable faces from the age of alternative music in Calgary. The space is open from noon until 8pm on Friday and Saturday. Be sure to visit all the other great little galleries on site.

Saturday

Schmancy Gala
As if you don’t want an excuse to get all dressed up and be fabulous this weekend. On February 22nd, the Schmancy Gala happens at the Glenbow. You will be in for a night of high art, edgy fashion and fun at this atypical fundraiser that will feature a special Q and A with Bryan Adams, whose exhibition, Exposed, will be running at the Glenbow from February 23rd to May 4th. This will be one classy affair.

Sunday

Bond, James Bond
On Sunday afternoon you are invited to witness an incredible musical tribute to the international man of mystery and martinis: James Bond. The concert will feature classic tunes from the James Bond soundtrack compliments of the Calgary Civic Symphony and Tara Sloane of Breakfast Television (the Bond girl). If you feel like showing up a bit early, you can partake in the fun casino that starts at 1pm. Enjoy a drink while you roll the dice. Tickets are $20. Begins at 2:30pm.
