Calgary Weekender: February 15 through 17, 2013

Love is in the air this week with St. Valentine’s Day. Don’t forget to check out our Valentine’s Day article about what is happening in the city Thursday night.

Ever wondered where the flying aliens in the movie Pitch Black, or the giant crocodile in Peter Pan, came from? Now you have the chance. John Cox’s Creature Workshop has created some of the world’s coolest animatronic movie visuals. Being held at the Telus Spark Science Centre, it is the Canadian debut of this major travelling exhibition. Find out what it takes to become animatronic puppeteers, lighting technicians, creature designers and more.

After, why not head to 17 Avenue to check out newly opened MARKET (718 17th Ave SW). Having just opened their doors last week, Market is already creating a buzz. The team is composed of young, passionate and talented industry professionals, including their Executive Chef and recently announced TOP CHEF CANADA contestant Geoff Rogers. They are also the first restaurant in Calgary to use an internal home garden, the Urban Cultivator, enabling them to grow more than 16 different varieties of heirloom seeds year round.

For those of you who love to brunch, but may be looking for a new spot, we suggest going to Ox and Angela Saturday morning for their newly launched brunch. The menu is great; they offer sangria at breakfast and, best of all, they take reservations; You can avoid the usual line-ups and still get your fill of your morning favourites.

Saturday evening, The Classical Guitar Society of Calgary presents William Kanengiser. Recognized as one of America’s most brilliant guitarists, William Kanengiser has developed a unique repertoire for his instrument, ranging from dazzling arrangements of Mozart, Handel, and Bartók to his innovative excursions into the music of Eastern Europe and the Caribbean. Catch his performance at the Leacock Theatre, Mt. Royal University.
