Calgary Weekender: December 9 through 11, 2011

Another weekend is upon us and there is a ton of stuff happening in the city. Taking an interesting approach, Friday after work you are going to be packing up all your gently-used clothes out of your closet and heading down to Eau Claire Market for the Crazy Christmas Clothing Swap Fundraiser. There’s more to it, but that’s it for Friday.

After lightening your load, head to Art Spot, located in the beltline (1040 14th Ave SW), to show your support for local artists (and maybe do a little Christmas shopping?). Friday night, Art Spot is hosting the Under $100 Art Show and Sale. As a non-profit organization that caters to an alternative art community, they encourage emerging and alternative style artists. This show will be featuring a variety of goods created by local artists including paintings, photography, prints, pottery, glassware, jewelry, clothing, accessories, music, and magazines. If you are looking for unique and awesome gifts, this is definitely worth checking out. Cash only!

After picking up a couple of one-of-a-kind pieces, grab your friends and head down the street and pop into Borgo for a few share plates and bottles of bubbles. They have quickly become a favourite amongst the city’s YPs since opening.

Saturday morning you’re heading back to Eau Claire at 10am for the second part of the Crazy Christmas Clothing Swap Fundraiser. Intrigued? Well, all you have to do is drop of the clothes the night before and pay $5 to restock your own closet with ‘new’ pieces for your wardrobe. Proceeds from this will go towards CUPS

Since you are down there, we suggest heading onto Prince’s Island Park for lunch at River Cafe. Warm up with a bowl of Beck Farm roasted carrot soup with Fairwinds farm yogurt, moorish spices, and mint

After lunch, how about spending the afternoon at the Ship and Anchor? The Sadler-Brown Family Band will be in the house hosting Open Stage with special guest Sam Masterton. Open Stage goes from 2pm until 6pm and is a great way to spend an afternoon, especially when you know The Sadler-Browns are hosting.

Sunday you’re heading to the community of Kensington for Market Collective. Created to strengthen the art community in Calgary, this independent artist market showcases the works of local artists, artisans and musicians. Another great spot for amazing gift ideas. Best part? You’re supporting local talent.

After so much shopping this weekend, you are going to need to kick back for a good Sunday evening consisting of a pint, quality pub food and some spectacular live music. We think 1410 Bier Haus is just the spot. Sunday night, Calgary’s own Brent Tyler is in the haus for a special performance. The best description of his music and live performance is simple: Big acoustic love.
