Calgary Weekender: December 6 through 8, 2013

Friday

Kingsland Farmer’s Market
From Thursday to Sunday each week you can head to the Kingsland Farmer’s Market to stock up on organic produce, Ocean Wise seafood and gluten-free goodies. The market also has a few spots where you can stop for lunch like Big Catch Sushi and Primal Soup Co. This Friday is Reindeer Day, and there will be an actual reindeer on site waiting to have its picture taken with you from 1pm to 5pm.

Friday/Saturday

Loose Moose Theatre
Loose Moose Theatre is for theatregoers looking for some ‘out there’ comedy. If this sounds like you, then go see Christmoose Carol this weekend (the theatre’s zany version of Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas Carol). This annual production always has a different twist that will keep you in stitches. Tickets are $22. If you’re still in the mood to be out and about after the show, you can cruise to The Blues Can in Inglewood to catch some live music and enjoy a pint (1429 9th Avenue SE).

Friday/Saturday/Sunday

It’s A Wonderful Life
It’s a Wonderful Life opens this Friday night, a play is based on the classic 1946 film that has become a staple of Christmas. It’s A Wonderful Life tells the story of George Bailey, a man who finds himself on a bridge one Christmas Eve ready to commit suicide when his guardian angel Clarence intervenes to show him all the good he’s done for his town. This is a feel good tale that will touch even the biggest of Scrooges out there. For information on show times and tickets, you can visit the website.

Saturday

Deck the Walls
If you’re out and about on Saturday, stop in to the Deck the Walls exhibit at Newzones Gallery. The display is ever-changing and the impressive collection covers an entire gallery wall with a variety of small and medium-sized paintings. You can appreciate the paintings of Kevin Sonmor, the pinhole photography of Dinanne Bos, the artwork of Bradley Harms, and so many other great artists. You might even find the perfect present for someone on your list. Calgary’s Eleventh Avenue is the perfect place to stroll on a Saturday for Christmas ideas or just to do a bit of window shopping.

Saturday/Sunday

Christmas Art Market
On December 7th and 8th, the Victoria Park Christmas Market will be taking place at Endeavour Arts on 1 Street SW. There will be 30 local artists, designers and makers selling a variety of crafts, clothing and more, as well as treats courtesy of Bernard Callebaut, hot chocolate and some great deals on merchandise from The Rewind Consignment Boutique. The event runs from 11am to 5pm and you are also welcome to stay for the Victoria Park Community Holiday Party following the market on Saturday. Stick around for music, drinks and some great prizes up for grabs.

Brasserie Brunch
If you haven’t yet been to Brasserie in Kensington, you should make your way there over the weekend for Brunchtacular, an awesome brunch experience happening between 10am and 2pm on Saturday and Sunday. Brasserie is a cozy 60-seat restaurant that doesn’t take itself too seriously, combining their love of French cuisine with local comfort food. The chef has actually said that he stole most of his recipes from his grandmother (that has to mean the food on the menu is worth trying).
