Calgary Weekender: December 31 through January 4, 2015

Christmas may be over but there’s still so much going on this week.

Whatever kind of celebrations or social engagements you’re after, we’ve created an amazing list of ideas that will help you party hard, recover the day after, and welcome in the New Year all in a few short days.

Happy 2015, Calgary…

WEDNESDAY (NEW YEAR’S EVE)

The countdown has officially begun.

If you read our Guide to New Year’s Eve in Calgary you’d know that Kid Koala will be keeping the party going at Republik until late.

Across town, the Standard Modern Speakeasy is putting on the glitz n’ glam with VIP packages and a formal dress code in effect.  We’re pretty sure the Rat Pack would approve.

National on 8th Avenue is serving an impressive four-course meal with beer pairings. Following this, you can hop over to the house party at their 10th Avenue location or bring your own vinyl to the 17th Avenue National. This is bar hopping at its best.

But that’s not all…

People who love to be the first to experience new things will want to make reservations at PDR – an exclusive new bar that’s open for business inside Model Milk tonight.

And if it’s a sleepover you’re after, Azuridge Estate is throwing an over the top pajama party with Great Gatsby decadence, late night DJs, and a superb sampling of Chef Yoshi’s food.

And in case you’re still in the market for ideas, here are some resolutions you might consider making. It’s never too late…

THURSDAY (NEW YEAR’S DAY)

Partied like a rock star on Wednesday night? The answer to sobriety is starting with some eggs and bacon at your favourite brunch time hangout followed by a bit of fresh air at Olympic Plaza.

For a full list of what to do on the first day of 2015 visit our Guide to What’s Open. Just don’t beat yourself up if you can’t start those healthy resolutions today.

FRIDAY

For those of you still trying to find ways to top your Wednesday night, Boys II Men are playing at Cowboy’s Dance Hall. Apparently they’ll even make love to you

The Palomino is also throwing what’s sure to be a rowdy rock party.

If you’re into a more casual drink and a folk inspired performance, Wine Ohs will be the place to grab a quiet booth and a nice glass of wine.

Saturday

For lovers of strong coffee and fresh pastries, treat yourself to somewhat of a hidden gem in Mission. La Boulangerie lines up early though, so don’t sleep in.

Canada Olympic Park is hosting the FIS Freestyles Ski World Cup. As far as we can tell, this will involve athletes from 14 different countries hurtling down the hill at outrageous speeds.

Later on in the evening, A Night Under the Stars gala takes place at the Winsport Institute. If mingling with the Calgary Flames and wearing your most formal outfit sounds appealing then don’t wait to buy your tickets.

Sunday

To bring a nice close to the holidays you can take in a detox hot yoga class at the Yoga Hot Shop on 13th Avenue SW.

After you sweat out all those bubbles you consumed on the 31st, you have a few great options for dinner.

Brava’s Sunday dinner is always a big hit but if you’re looking to try another one of YYC’s newest eateries, Corbeaux Bakehouse is open late and the delectable dishes here will make you forget all about the cold weather.
