If you’ve ever complained about a lack of cool things going on in this city, you’ll think differently after this weekend. Get into the music of Phantogram or jam out with cult indie bands at Freeze Fest; take over the streets for a Santa-inspired bike ride or hear about online dating at the science centre’s adult night. And if you’re into clubbing all the time, then you have to buy tickets to Bespoke’s special gourmet brunch with a generous supply of bubbles

We’re more than halfway there, Calgary.

Chanukah gets spinning in only a few days, two weeks from now it’ll be Christmas, and just one day after that, we get a glorious Boxing-Day-Kwanzaa-Bonanza.

No doubt you’re already busy closing out the quarter, getting in your charity contribution, and replacing half of your breathing with excessive calorie ingestion. But around this time of year, everyone’s always got room for more.

So make space, Calgary; your weekend starts now …

THURSDAY
Phantogram is playing at Flames Central tonight with special guests Mountie and Dear Rouge. This will be nothing short of a fantastic show.

If science is your jam, the Telus Sparks Center is throwing their Adult Night. You’ll get to hear from Dr. Edwin Sheppard and learn a little something about the craze of online dating.

And once you hear from the experts on the ins and outs of digital romance you’ll still have time to see the Zoo Lights that are just a quick walk from the science centre.

FRIDAY
If you imbibed Thursday night you’ll want to stop in at Cafe Rosso for a stiff Americano.

Later in the day, the Nite Owl will be shaking with sets by Napalmpom, Sidney York and The LBJS for Freeze Fest. The highlight of the evening will be the Wet Secrets (who are loved for their oddball line-up of songs and outrageous marching band outfits).

Those in search of a chill Friday night can head to Cafe Koi for some cocktails and house music in an intimate setting.

Looking for something a little more risqué? The Ramblin’ Ambassadors and Garter Girls will be steaming up Dicken’s pub with a special holiday performance.

Did someone say tassels?

SATURDAY
Heading to the mountains on the weekend is always a good choice. Right now the Winterstart Festival is happening in Banff and Lake Louise. Get into the holiday spirit with skiing, Santa and lots of great shopping opportunities.

But if you’re staying in the city and have a hankering for stand-up, you’ll appreciate the art installation at the New Gallery. Untitled is an unusual open-mic experience.

In case you didn’t get the monthly memo Tubby Dog is hosting their Corporate Karaoke night. A few domestic beers and a PB&J hotdog will make you feel like a regular songbird. This is going to be so much more fun than your office party.

If you missed out on their recent hot dog eating contest then you simply must make this your go-to cultural experience for the weekend.

SUNDAY
The Cyclepalooza Santa Scramble happens this Sunday and will be a cool experience for all winter biking fans. Dress up as old Saint Nick or an elf before you head out on two wheels to conquer the winter wonderland that we call Calgary.

For a little Champagne with brunch you’ll want to attend Toast and Jam at Bespoke nightclub. Enjoy some DJ music and a gourmet meal compliments of Nicole Gourmet. The bubbles won’t stop flowing here.

After brunch you can hop over to the Collector’s Club to find the most hip and coveted of presents for yourself or for someone special.
