Calgary Weekender: August 29 to September 1, 2014

Thursday

Alley Party
If there’s one party that can ease the pain of summer’s near end, it’s the Alley Party. In it’s sixth year, Theater Junction Grand joins forces again with HiFi to bring out world-renowned DJ Thee Mike B, along with some of the Calgary’s best turntable talent, to get the alley moving. Getting your drinks inside is also appealing, as one of the city’s finest venues opens up to give you a break from the shoulder-to-shoulder dance party. Don’t stay inside too long, though, as noise by-laws insist that the DJs stop spinning around 11. Entry is by a suggested donation of $10.

Flow by the Bow
As if the list of things we won’t be able to do in about a month isn’t long enough, we’re adding outdoor yoga to the queue. Thankfully, the East Village is putting on this third annual event, which was postponed due to bad weather on August 7th. If you already have your tickets, great, they’re still good. And even if you don’t, lucky you, because they’re still available for $10. Show up early to make sure you get a good spot, as this rare event gets busy quick. Hint to the single YPs out there: this is a really good chance to say namaste to some healthy prospects.

Friday/Saturday/Sunday

BBQ on the Bow
For those of you who aren’t squealing like little schoolgirls at the thought of this weekend’s Katy Perry concert, the other massive event in town might be more your speed. BBQ on the Bow is Canada’s oldest BBQ event and as an “Official Qualifying Event of the World Food Championships,” the competition is sure to sizzle. Events include a pork loin battle, an under-15 face off, and a rookie of the year award dubbed “Lords of the Grill.” There’s never been a better opportunity for Calgarians to discover the thrilling world of competitive barbecuing.

Saturday

Canmore Highland Games/Taste of the Highlands
Need to escape the city but can’t go too far this long weekend? Head west on Hwy 1 to Canmore for the town’s biggest event of the summer: The Canmore Highland Games. Once there, leave the axe-throwing to the burly, bearded men and head to the Taste of the Highlands in the Big Rock Tent for food, beer, wine and (obviously) Scotch. And while you fill up on that, remember to stay hydrated by bringing your own water source, as the town doesn’t allow the sale of plastic bottles.

Sunday

Pride Festival
Celebrate Calgary’s rich LGBTQ culture this weekend as our very own Pride festival comes to a close. The parade kicks off Sunday at noon on Stephen Ave. and Centre St. and ends at Shaw Millennium Park, where the free festival goes on until 6pm. There are so many other parties, shows and forums on, so we highly suggest you check out the website to make sure you catch what’s most appealing to you.

Monday

Labour Day Classic
Every year on this one special Monday, sports fans and haters unite to defeat a common enemy: Edmonton. It really doesn’t matter if you can tell a field goal from a punt, as this game promises to be a party. And for those of you who do care about the CFL, the match-up is being touted as possibly the biggest Labour Day Classic in history, with the Stamps being tied with the Eskies at the top of the West with records of 7-1. Either way, it’s worth it for the tailgating.
