Calgary Weekender: August 23 through 26, 2012

Thursday evening we suggest heading to Broken City for AdDrinx’s Second Anniversary party. Mix and mingle with Calgary YPs in the marketing/media world at this tiki-themed event. Stay late for the first-ever AdDrinx all-nighter with the AdRox YYC Beastie Boys Tribute Show in partnership with Broken City. See local Calgary bands take on the B-Boys collection. Confirmed bands include HighKicks, Blist, Rap X, Blades of Steel, Go for the Eyes, and Miesha Louie.

For those looking for something outdoors and a little retro, the East Village will be hosting a free screening of ‘Flashdance’ on the side of the Simmons Building. The show will start between 9:30 and 10:00pm, but YPs are encouraged to come down early rocking your best ‘80s gear to take part in a Flashdance fashion show. Local media, including our very own Notable.ca Calgary Editor Katy Bond, will be judging the best outfit on RiverWalk with awesome prizes going to the top three.

Friday evening is an evening of soulful crooning by the legend Tony Bennett. In town for one night, he will be performing at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium (1415 14 Avenue North West). He’s one of a handful of artists to introduce a multitude of songs into the Great American Songbook that have since become standards for pop music; be swept away to an era gone by as you listen to him belt out one hit after another.

Saturday there are several festivals to choose from. For those looking for a little Latin flavour, check out Expo Latino, Western Canada’s largest Latin festival taking place over the weekend at Prince’s Island Park. The stage will be sizzling with world-class performances of music and dance. Take a spin on the dance floor, taste exotic foods, and shop at the Art Market, which will be full of all kinds of vendors. Experience Latin culture through discovery, learning, and celebrating the people, music and food that makes it so great.

For those of you who prefer flying high, the Aviation Calgary Expo will be happening both Saturday and Sunday at the Aero Space Museum Association of Calgary (4629 McCall Way NE). The weekend will be full of aviation shows, events, entertainment, food, education and more. Catch a rare plane take flight over the city and see a number of aircrafts on display up close.

If you are in the mood for a little competition, the Calgary Dragon Boat Race and Festival will be taking over North Glenmore Park (7305 Crowchild Tr. SW) throughout the weekend. Geared towards creating an unforgettable experience, this event will attract over 900 competitors. Did you know that Dragon Boat Racing stems from a 2000-year-old Chinese legend, and is still a very active tradition to many? Grab some friends and pack a picnic to spend the afternoon watching the reservoir come alive with the colourful dragon-decorated boats, each in pursuit of triumph.

The competitive mood continues on Sunday with the Super-Bowl – the lawnbowling tournament hosted by Analog, Gravis, Frends and Groupseven. Register a group of four online and head down to the Inglewood lawnbowling Club (1235 8 Ave SE) from 2:00pm to 5:00pm to throw a couple of balls for fun. There will also be a free BBQ, and prizes for the best teams and best shots of the day.
