Calgary Weekender: August 10 Through 12, 2012

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a YP in Calgary who isn’t familiar with the food trucks that have descended upon the city in the last year. Friday we suggest heading to River Walk (618 Confluence Way) at 12pm to experience and learn about all the foods available from Calgary’s trucks at YYC Taste The Trucks II. Enjoy live music, street vendors, and beer gardens at the festival. Be sure to have your game face on as Eat. St. will also be on site filming an episode for its third season.

Friday evening pop into Haight Gallery (2018 24th Avenue NW) for the Portraits II Opening Reception happening from 7pm to 11pm. Peruse the new works by Julien Fournier at this solo exhibition. You won’t be disappointed – Julien Fournier, a Calgary based visual artist, focuses his work on social psychologies and theoretical linguistics, their effects on the verbal and written word, and how people interact with one another.

We know you are going to want to discuss the art with friends, so why not head down to Una Pizza and Wine after the show for late night eats and a bottle of wine?

Saturday morning there are several festivals worth checking out. Want to rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit? Then check out the Wellness Festival, happening from 10am to 5pm at Murdoch Park (917 Centre Ave NE).
Get inspired at this free one-day event that integrates all aspects of ecology, health, and wellness. Enjoy healthy food, feature lectures, presentations, seminars, workshops with renowned holistic health experts, and interactive exhibits.

Marda Gras Street Festival is also taking place throughout the day at the shopping district (33 and 34 Ave) in the community of Marda Loop. Watch the streets come alive with live music, vendors, delicious food and exciting performances throughout the day, as you experience the sights and sounds of New Orleans, with its purple, green and gold pageantry at this one-day festival.

Saturday evening we think you should grab some friends and head to Broken City (613 -11Ave SW) to experience Old School Hip-Hop Night. This weekly party is dedicated to the golden era of Hip Hop, and
DJs Dan Solo & Typist with rotating guests stick strictly to 80s & 90s hip-hop music.

Sunday morning you are off to the Southwest corner of Riley Park for the 5th Annual One Yoga in the Park (www:uend.org): a giant, outdoor, karma yoga event in support of U:End Poverty projects. Be part of creating an incredible atmosphere full of energy and intention to help end poverty. Registration begins at 9am and yoga at 10am. Stick around after the practice and enjoy live music, food and beverages with friends old and new.

With it being Sunday, many of you will need to stock up on groceries and what not for the coming week. We think you should pop in to Old School Emporium, located in the heart of the city (115 – 880 16 Ave SW), to check out their edible delights and wondrous wares. The shelves are stocked with enjoyable and quality foods like local fresh fruits and vegetables and meats free from antibiotics and hormones, as well as products from abroad that fit the bill for quality ingredients and hand-craftiness.
