Calgary Weekender: August 1 through 3, 2014

Thursday

Luchadores Are Hitting The Club
Start your long weekend off with the Native Tongues grand finale that’s happening on July 31. This is going to be a weird and wild going away party that bids Calgary’s favourite taco shop a fond farewell from Commonwealth Bar as they get ready to open up in a cool new location. The evening will be filled with tacos, luchadores and mad DJ entertainment. These Mexican wrestling events are something that everyone needs to experience, so get your tickets and be there no later than 8pm.

All Weekend

Calgary’s International Blues Festival
Calgary Bluesfest will be keeping crowds entertained from July 31 to August 3 with a full line up of international blues musicians and dance parties. This year Joe Louis Walker, Ana Popovic and the Mannish Boys Revue are but a few of the names on the roster. You can also catch Kenny Wayne, who will be ripping it up on the keys, and Too Slim, who will be getting the party going with a little thing called swamp groove. For the full line up and ticket information check out the Bluesfest site.

The Fringe
Originally out of Edinburgh, Scotland, the Fringe has grown to be an internationally recognized event that supports theatre arts and celebrates the uncensored and unconventional realm of performing arts. If you’re a fan of theatre you’ll be proud to hear that Alberta hosts the second largest Fringe in the world with an annual attendance of 800,000 attendees who converge on Edmonton every year. Calgary’s Fringe may not be quite as big as Edmonton’s, but the local version of this festival is still very worth attending with an entertaining cross section of actors, street performers, buskers and artisans who will bring vibrancy to the streets of Inglewood.

The Canmore Folk Fest
If you didn’t get your fill of folk music in town last weekend, the Canmore Folk Fest is taking place from August 2 to 4 at Centennial Park. If you wanted to get out to the mountains but couldn’t get organized in time, here’s a great option for a day trip or one night stay. This year the Deep Dark Woods, The Strumbellas and Michael Bernard Fitzgerald will all take the stage to wow audiences.

Saturday

Inglewood Sunfest
Apparently Inglewood is the place to be this weekend. If you had planned to catch anything for the Fringe this Saturday, then you might as well head down a little early to experience the Inglewood Sunfest that’s taking place from 11am to 5pm. This street festival is not your average street-side stroll and might make you feel like you’ve just entered a carnival. There’s going to be quite an interesting mix of sword swallowing demonstrations, roller derby, ping-pong games and unicycle riding.

Saturday and Sunday

Tapas for Brunch
Head to 17th Avenue this weekend for one of the most delicious meals you’ll find in Calgary. Go for the full tapas brunch table menu ($21 per person for a minimum of two guests, and worth every penny) and you’ll enjoy a sampling of their signature Patatas Bravas, those incredible Serrano-wrapped dates, and the heavenly Huevos Benedictine, just to get you started. For some further refreshment, their unique cocktail pitchers will be just what el doctor ordered. Every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 2:30pm.
