Calgary Weekender: April 4 through 6, 2014

Friday/Saturday/Sunday

The Mountaintop
If you’ve been waiting to see a stellar theatre performance, then you must see The Mountaintop. This tale recounts the last night of Martin Luther King Jr.’s life in the infamous Hotel Lorraine in Memphis and what unfolds just hours before his death. Tickets for this weekend’s shows are moving quickly, so don’t wait. Following the show, you have lots of great little spots along Stephen Avenue to grab dinner or a drink. Blink and Murieta’s are both lovely options for a bite or a glass of wine. The Mountaintop begins at 8pm.

Sustainable YYC Show
Are you going to the Sustainable YYC Fashion Show on April 10th? If you plan to attend, then you better grab your tickets this weekend. As part of Down To Earth Week, the REAP organization will be transforming the Arrata Opera Centre (located at 1315 7th Ave SW) into a house of style and you’ll be entertained with guest speakers who will be giving tips on how to be sustainably stylish. There will even a style lounge with local business and designers who will be on hand to tell you a little bit more about this cool project.

Saturday

The Art of the Cocktail
It’s time to go Mad Men this weekend, so dig out that cocktail dress and fancy suit for Calgary’s best cocktail party happening all month. The Grand Tasting takes place on Saturday evening in the Jack Singer Lobby as part of the three-day Art of the Cocktail Festival. Industry patrons and professionals alike will bond over their love for the fanciest new drinks and infusions being poured while enjoying unique seminars, competitions, and sampling some of the city’s best hors d’oeuvres. This will be one classy event!

Hawkers Market
This is going to be awesome. Saturday will be Calgary’s first-ever Hawkers Market, which will involve local food and loud music in an underground market that doesn’t get going until 6pm. These epic parties originated in Vancouver and are now making their way to Calgary. You can purchase tickets in advance for $10 or grab them at the door for $15. The market will be held at Studio 122, one of the coolest commercial studio spaces in the city (4029 8th Street SE).

Sunday

Spoken Word Festival
As the Spoken Word festival comes to a close, this will be one of your last opportunities to participate in some literary fun. The Rose and Crown will be hosting an interactive storytelling session on April 6th where guests are encouraged to participate by sharing their best five-minute, mostly-true stories. If you have a yarn that you’d like to spin for audiences, then make sure to be at this 17th Avenue pub for 7pm.

Gettin’ Jiggy With It
This Sunday you can party with purpose and style at this ‘90s-themed fundraiser for Mpact Dance, one of Calgary’s most socially conscious performance groups. In support of their upcoming show, The Cypher, Sunday’s event will feature a silent auction, plenty of drinks, appetizers, local hip-hop and DJ talent. All the fun goes down at Hotel Arts located at 12th Avenue SW. This is your chance to showcase those dance moves that haven’t been in vogue for two decades. The fundraiser begins at 7pm.
