Calgary Weekender: April 25 through 27, 2014

Friday/Saturday/Sunday

Calling All Comic Lovers
One of the great things about comic books is that you’re never too old to enjoy them. This weekend the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo is on so and there will be lots of weird and wacky exhibits to visit. If comics aren’t really your thing, then you still might be interested to meet Giancarlo Esposito from Breaking Bad, Bruce Campbell from the Evil Dead series, and Danny Glover from Lethal Weapon, who will also be in attendance. On Saturday you’ll be able to hear from a panel of actors from the incredibly popular show Hell on Wheels, which is filmed in and around Calgary.

Night Owl
These two industrious coffee connoisseurs have teamed up with Tool Shed Brewing Company and Big Rock to create Night Owl, a coffee stout that will please coffee and beer lovers simultaneously. Made with Kabingara AA beans out of Kenya, the tasting notes for this one include hints of currant and sweet caramel with a creamy finish. Phil and Sebastian in Mission will be serving this beer exclusively until May 2, so make your way to 4th Street and enjoy a nice cold one while getting your coffee buzz on.

Black Pig Bistro
The North East just got a little bit cooler. Everyone knows that Bridgeland is the place to go for the some of the best breakfast in town, but this week the Black Pig Bistro opened its doors on 1st Avenue which, means Calgarians will now have a place to enjoy a standout dinner and a few post-meal drinks. Vine Arts is behind the wine list and Milk Tiger has lent some inspiration to the cocktail menu. This hip bistro just opened its doors yesterday, so be that person who is in the know this weekend and suggest dinner plans at the Black Pig.

Bryan Adams
We all know Bryan Adams for his classic tunes from the album Waking Up The Neighbors, but have you seen his photographs? The Glenbow Museum has Adams’ Exposed on display until May 4, and if you haven’t been to see this yet you should consider making your way down to the museum this weekend. The series of photos capture celebrities in a series that is candid, earnest and stirring. There is a special selection of shots capturing the late Amy Winehouse and some absolutely brilliant images of Ben Kingsley, Sean Penn, Lindsay Lohan and Michael Jackson.

Under the Big Top
Cavalia Odysseo is now on! This is a great event if you have friends coming into town and need something fun to do. This is also a great option if you want to experience a different kind of night out. This is one part Cirque de Soleil, and one part Stampede, with dancers, acrobats, musicians and 70 horses performing amazing feats that defy gravity and all expectations. As a tip, make sure you arrive a little early because parking close to the event fills up quickly. Look out for the shuttles that leave from the second parking lot if you are running a little behind.

Saturday

The Heart Truth
During the evening of April 26th you can attend a fashion show with a lot of heart! In an effort to raise awareness about women’s health, The Heart Truth Fashion Show will feature an exciting group of designers who will be dressing local personalities and VIPs in signature red dresses for a one-of-a-kind event. Once you’re dressed and looking fabulous for the evening, why not head to Cucina (515 8th Avenue SW) for a meal? This sweet little eatery is close to the event and is the perfect place to start a classy evening.
