Calgary Weekender: April 19 through 21, 2013

Friday
It’s not hard to find a reason to go out and celebrate here in Calgary; we’re even pretty stoked right now because the snow melted. Get yourself in a funky Friday mood with Stickybuds’ I Just Want to Celebrate remix and then make your way to his show. The 2012 Shambhala headliner and Calgary favourite is playing at TEN Nightclub; tickets are $15 at the door and his set starts at 12:45am.

Saturday
April 20 is Record Store day, so hit up Sloth Records and support the local shop, often voted the best place to buy music in Calgary. Everything will be on sale, from new and used LPs to books and shirts. Ask what upcoming shows they are selling tickets to and stay tuned for the list of limited vinyl releases they’ll have. 736b 17th Ave SW

If you’re up for a little jaunt to the mountains, head out to Banff Saturday night for the Culture Crawl between 5pm and 7pm. Complimentary drinks and snacks can be found while you gaze at the artwork at the Canada House Gallery, Willock & Sax Gallery, All in the Wild, Stonewaters, and Mountain Galleries at the Fairmont Banff Springs. Banff’s springstART Festival is on through the end of this weekend, so take some time to check out the breathtaking National Park’s impact on the arts.

Sunday
The Glenbow’s No Roads Here: Corb Lund’s Alberta exhibition is in its final days. From ranching, oil drilling, veterinary medicine and Mormonism, the exhibition represents the singer’s unique take on Alberta. 130 — 9 Avenue S.E.

If you haven’t checked out the new olive oil shop Oil & Vinegar at the Core yet, make your way downtown and get yourself an upgrade to the grocery store variety. Made for drizzling, not cooking, score some white truffle infused extra virgin olive oil and try it on your scrambled eggs. Or buy a buttery variety and drizzle it on chocolate ice cream with some sea salt. 154-317 7th Ave SW, TD Square/The Core Calgary

If you’ve been eyeing the foliage out there and contemplating flexing your green thumbs this summer, make your way to the Telus Spark Science Centre for a special weekend event showcasing innovations in urban gardening. Find out what Vertical Oxygen is, or sit in on the talks and lessons to be had on topics ranging from beekeeping to composting. Help out the science centre at the vegetable planting session by planting kale, sunflower or sweet pea seeds now, before they get transplanted later in May.
