Calgary Weekender: April 17 through 20, 2014

Friday/Saturday

Trepanier Baer Gallery
This art gallery is always known for bringing interesting and creative exhibitions of work to Calgary and right now you can see the work of Chris Millar, whose current exhibit, ‘Lost a Cartful, Found a Wagonload’, is now on display. Millar completed his BFA at the Alberta College of Art and Design and creates works that can be summed up as being incredible, bizarre and satirical as each work draws influence from absurdity in our pop culture, including rock music, popular art and television, and comic books. You’ll love the layers of commentary and materials of his work.

This Little Piggy
If you like pigs, puppets and organ music then you’ll want to check out this event. During the weekend you can catch the latest collaboration between the Old Trout Puppet Workshop and the Calgary Folk Music Festival. This Little Piggy tells a dark and unusual tale that has been described as a “dust bowl folk opera.” Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Before the show you can enjoy dinner at one of the many great establishments in the area. Within walking distance to Festival Hall you have Rouge, Jacqueline Suzanne’s Bistro and Salt & Pepper if you’re in the mood for Mexican food.

Friday/Saturday/Sunday

Young Frankenstein
If you want to tickle your funny bone you should look into getting tickets for Young Frankenstein. This production is based on the classic and hilarious film by Mel Brooks, the mastermind behind other hit shows like The Producers. Welcome to the laboratory of Dr. Frankenstein, where bringing a science experiment to life results in singing, dancing and a monstrously good time. The musical is full of show stopping tunes like ‘The Transylvania Mania’ and ‘He Vas My Boyfriend’.’ Tickets are $20 and the show begins at 7:30pm Friday/Saturday with a matinee on Sunday afternoon at 2pm.

Cut Copy Comes to Town
Cut Copy is the best thing to come out of Australia since koala bears and they will be in town on May 26th with special guests Bear Mountain. The group dabbles mainly in electronic pop and you can hear their newest album ,’Free Your Mind’, on www. timbreconcerts.com. If you’re looking for an excuse to go out on a Monday night, this is probably the best possible event you can attend. Show begins at 9pm and tickets are $30 in advance.

Saturday

Improv Games: Catching Funds
Taking inspiration from the Hunger Games, two tributes from each improv group around the city will meet to do battle on the stage in an attempt to win the audience’s approval. Each audience member will be presented with special coins, which they can use to sponsor their favourite district during different parts of the elimination rounds. All proceeds will be going towards getting this not-for-profit company off the ground. May the odds be ever in your favour. The battle begins at 7:30pm.

Sunday

Easter Brunch
While the kiddies get to search for Easter treats this weekend it only seems fair that we young professionals should also get to enjoy ourselves as well.  When all the chocolate eggs have been found you should consider meeting family and friends for brunch at Yellow Door Bistro located in Hotel Arts. Be sure to try the duck confit with poached eggs or the banana chocolate chip pancakes with dolce de leche cream. Yum! Make your reservation online or call 403-206-9585403-206-9585.
