Calgary Weekender: April 13 through 15, 2012

This weekend there is a ton of great stuff happening in Calgary and with the weather starting to warm up, we know you want to hit the town.

Thursday night the Telus Spark Science Centre is hosting it’s monthly Adult Only Night. They’ll be open late (10pm) and catering to the YP crowd. Break objects apart to explore their inner workings, create smash-art to testing your smash-proofing skills and check out the various exhibits. DJ Teddy Celebration will be back and spinning amazing tracks to provide the perfect music to smash along to.

Friday after work instead of hitting up your usually watering hole we suggest heading over to Gerry Thomas Gallery for their monthly Friday Night Social beginning at 4pm. This month they are featuring a wine tasting with food pairing, live entertainment and their featured artist for April. It’s going to be a fun evening of networking and socializing with like-minded lovers of art, wine and culture.

At 7pm, head over to the Arrata Opera Centre (1315 – 7 Street SW), where the Calgary Opera will be hosting A Taste of the Opera. Get the inside scoop on their productions with a pre-show discussion. After the talk, stay for a “taste of the region” in which the opera takes place, with food provided by a local restaurant or caterer and a glass of wine provided by Kensington Wine Market. This month’s theme is A Bohème-inspired dinner. With limited seating, we suggest pre-ordering your tickets

Saturday we have a few different options depending on what you are in the mood for.

Looking for something with high-energy? Flat Track Fever, Alberta’s largest roller derby tournament, will be taking place at the Olympic Oval. Hosted by Chinook City Roller Derby, teams from Canada and the USA will be competing. Proceeds are in support of the Calgary YWCA.

For the ladies looking for a one-stop experience for women’s fashion, style, health and wellness, there is also The Calgary Women’s Show at the BMO Centre. Peruse the booths and check out the special guest appearances by Dragon’s Den philanthropist W. Brett Wilson and actor Peter Bergman of The Young and the Restless. If you miss hitting up the show on Saturday it will be going on all day Sunday, too.

Saturday evening, doll yourself up for the Mix it Up for a Cause fundraising gala in support of KidSport Calgary. Taking place at Hotel Arts, they will be showcasing cocktail flair and cool eats, live entertainment by local dynamo Kyemara, and an amazing selection of silent auction items.

For those who love a classic broadway show, Cats is hitting Calgary at the Epcor Centre. This show was a worldwide sensation when it premiered in 1981 and continues to be one of the most beloved musicals of all time. This performance will be the first made-in-Alberta production of this ground breaking musical.

After the show why not head down Stephen Avenue to Divino for a glass of wine and cheese plate. It’s the purrrrfect after-show nibble.

We know you have a bit of spring fever. On Sunday, for those with a bit of a green thumb, we suggest you check out the Garden Show being held at Spruce Meadows. This annual event brings together over 10,000 gardening and outdoor living enthusiasts complete with vendors, speakers from across Canada, local gardening experts, hands-on activities and how-to clinic demonstrations. The show runs April 14 and 15 from 9am to 5pm. Advance tickets available online here.

Sunday evening we know you aren’t going to want to be cooking. We have the perfect solution: Model Milk now offers Sunday Supper, a feast of wholesome goodness served family-style. This pre-set menu is served until 10pm and is $35 per person.
