Calgary Weekender: April 12 through 14, 2013

Friday
Movie night? Check out the opening of the movie 42. The docudrama/biography staring Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford and Nicole Beharie is about Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford), legendary manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, as he defies major league baseball’s notorious colour barrier by signing Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the team in 1946.

If you’re up for some musical entertainment, head to the Palomino for folk-punk rockers Spencer Jo & River Ramble, folk rockers Owls by Nature and folk-indie-pop rockers the Alright Gents. The folk rock triple header starts off at 9pm and is just $10 at the door. The Palomino109 7th Avenue SW

Wishin’ you were at Coachella? Get in on the music while avoiding the lines and all that walking; stream it online on YouTube. Not all the shows will be streamed, but be sure to catch Japandroids, Purity Ring and Jurassic 5, among others, on Friday.

Saturday
Saturday afternoon, stroll on down to the Herringer Kiss Gallery (709A 11th Ave) in the Beltline and get your Gumby on at Superelastic. The art show features distorted and stretched paintings by Ben van Netten.

Then hop over to 17th Ave and check out Freak Lunchbox. This Saturday kicks off National Dental Hygienists Week, so get munching on some lego-shaped candy or dip into the bin of the bananas that come in a box of Runts, and make that Monday morning call to book a dentist appointment all the more worth it. They also have a great selection of gift items from whacky wine stoppers to Whoopee Cushions. 614A 17 Ave. S.W.

If you’re in the mood for some cards in a James Bond setting, make your way to The Rotary Club of Calgary Crowchild Urban Spirits’ The Big Deal – Casino Royale. There’s a silent auction, poker tournament, roulette, blackjack and craps. Proceeds go to Missing Children of Canada and Rotary youth programs and more information can be found here.
