Calgary Weekender: April 11 through 13, 2014

Friday/Saturday

Double Zero
This popular pizzeria has just opened up a second location at the Chinook Centre. You can now enjoy their famous thin crust Neapolitan pizza and all the other tasty Italian-inspired snacks on the menu once you’re done with shopping. Double Zero is also the perfect place to stop in for dinner before seeing a movie or hitting the bowling alley for a few rounds of 10 pin. Since opening its doors at the beginning of the month, the pizzeria has been pretty busy, so you might want to call or e-mail ahead to confirm your reservation.

Cabaret Brise-Jour
This weekend, L’Orchestre D’Hommes-Orchestres will be performing Cabaret Brise-Jour at the Theatre Junction GRAND. The cabaret re-interprets German composer Kurt Weill’s musical compositions, taking each piece a little further by adding another creative element like punk rock or hip-hop. Audiences will be in for a splendid evening of creative sounds and imagery that incorporate unconventional instruments. The performance starts at 8pm. For ticket pricing and seating options, you can visit the theatre website

Friday/Saturday/Sunday

CUFF
The Calgary Underground Film Festival gives Calgary a wonderful chance to check out what’s going on with film around the world as well as in our own backyard. While there is no shortage of exceptional films to choose from, Doomsday, which plays on Sunday night, looks to be a really interesting option. Described as a “pre-apocalyptic comedy,” this is the tale of two buddies who choose a life of slacking and vagabond activities in anticipation of the modern world’s inevitable collapse. The story follows the pair as they spend their days living the good life in other people’s vacation homes. For the full schedule of films and events happening this weekend, visit the CUFF website.

Saturday

Get Possessed
This Saturday you can dance the night away with Decidedly Jazz Danceworks’ annual gala taking place at Hotel Arts. The Possessed gala will feature the sounds of R&B, Funk, Motown and live DJ music. In an effort to shake up the usual gala scene in Calgary, this will prove to be an evening to remember. You’ll love the DJD dance performances, auction items and delicious assortment of snacks. Come dressed in your funkiest outfit and be prepared to let the good times roll. Tickets are $110 and the gala begins at 8pm.

Sunday

The Music of Science Fiction
On April 13th you can experience some fun and unusual music for a Sunday. The Calgary Jazz Orchestra presents brass band sounds that are probably best recognized on the streets of New Orleans. This orchestra includes a section of trombones, trumpets, saxophones and a rhythm section that will make you want to tap your feet and join in the celebration. Even if the music of the Big Easy isn’t really your thing, you’ll still enjoy the high-energy show. Make sure you’re in your seat for 7pm.

Kensington Wine Bar
Sundays always seem to get taken over with errands and chores like laundry. Yuk! Who really feels like cooking dinner after a busy weekend? If you’re looking for an alternative then you should hit Kensington Wine Bar to save yourself the dishes. The Wine Bar’s kitchen has new features every day, the tapas menu is perfect if you feel like sharing a few items, and Sunday night is half price wine night. C’mon folks, this is a no brainer.
