The Business of Weed – August 17th, 2018

This week in the world of weed…

The Business of Weed is a weekly series brought to you by Jay Rosenthal, the Co-founder and President of Business of Cannabis, to keep you up to date on all weed-related news. Here are this week’s biggest headlines.

4/1 the New 4/20Business-of-Weed-Business-of-Cannabis-Jay-Rosenthal-Doug-Ford-Cannabis-Edibles-Beer

The feather in the Canadian cannabis cap – retail in Ontario – has been determined. Newly-minted Premier Doug Ford did away with the LCBO model that his predecessor was looking to implement. And it’s a doozy. Ontario is going completely private – just not yet. October 17th will bring online sales to Ontario – but it won’t be until 4/1/2019 until you can buy your pot in your neighbourhood, private cannabis shop.

Con$tellation Brands

What is being deemed as one of the biggest deals ever in cannabis – Constellation Brands (the massive beverage company) is making another major investment in Canadian cannabis giant Canopy Growth. This time, the figure is nearly $5 billion (with a ‘b’), of Constellation funds into Canopy.

The feather in the Jobs, Jobs & More Jobs

With legalization comes lots and lots of cannabis jobs. If you are looking to join an incredibly fast-growing industry – this is the one for you. The job website Indeed gave up their data saying that 26 of every 10,000 searches are folks looking for jobs in the sector – a big increase over last year – where only 6 of every 10,000 searches were folks looking for weed jobs.

That’s it for this week! We’ll see you back next week for more cannabis related updates.
