Best Toronto Patios: El Catrin

El Catrin is the best place to go if you’re experiencing a craving of the Mexican munchies.

This restaurant is a perfect example of Mexican cuisine fused with (very historic) Toronto culture. The Distillery District has been a home to the Mexican restaurant for three years. Offering yet another reasons to be a part of Toronto’s food scene, El Catrin certainly lands on the top of Toronto’s best patios list.

The authentic Mexican cuisine caters to both traditionalists, and the outside-the-box foodies who enjoy a whole new take on tradition. One of Mexico City’s top chefs, Oliver Le Calvez, is the man behind the menu (with a little help from his friends), bringing Mexio’s hottest dishes to life in the heart of Toronto. Widely considered Toronto’s best Mexican restaurant, El Catrin’s reputation comes with attention to detail. The fiesta begins the moment you walk in, as traditional Mexican artwork decorates the restaurant. Resembling something you’d only see in Mexico, patterns of art bring individuality to this joint. The extensive drink menu will have you pondering in a number of different mescals and tequilas (over 120 options actually).

A mural covers the inside wall of the restaurant, highlighting Mexican artwork. It took 3 artists almost 100 days to complete the masterpiece (it truly is a masterpiece). Dim lighting inside sets the tone of intimacy, and seconds as a perfect first date.

As for the patio, it gives an impression of being in another country, and replicates a distinct vacation vibe, complete with a fire pit. This patio is perfect place for day drinking, and is worth the trip to Toronto’s Distillery District.

Since this is one of Toronto’s best, be sure to make reservations or you will (sadly) be turned away at the door. El Catrin is the place to go loco for, but don’t just take our word for it, check it out yourself.
