Beach House Recap

Currently on their Northern Exposure Tour, Beach House is making their way through the Great White North entertaining crowds with what might be described as one of the mellowest performances you’ll ever see.

This show won’t make you scream, head bang, or crowd surf – but if you’re into music of the Dream Pop persuasion then you’ll love these guys.

Now, for those of you who are thinking “What in the world is Dream Pop?” let’s back up for a second.

If you listen to CHVRCHES, M83 or Sigur Rós, then congratulations. You’re hip to the jive of what Dream Pop is all about.

Think atmosphere, and think of music that makes you want to space out and go to your happy place. Beach House is all that.

On Saturday night the crowd at Republik was treated to an extensive set that included many of the hits off the albums Teen Dream and Bloom.

Victoria Legrand’s voice was every bit as unique and alluring live as it is on the records and despite being jammed into the somewhat grimy venue, the band’s mix of keyboard melodies, vocals, and a drum machine made you feel like you were miles away.

Blowing up in recent years, Beach House quickly moved from the day-time stage at smaller festivals like Sasquatch to perform at the likes of Glastonbury in the U.K.

Oh, and having fans like Jay-Z and Bey in the crowd definitely hasn’t hurt.

For this reason, it wasn’t surprising that the group’s first-ever stop in Calgary was sold out well over a month in advance with last minute tickets going through private sales for almost 3 times the original price.

So let this be a warning to any of you fans in the East.

If you’re thinking about catching Beach House at bars or clubs in Ottawa, Montreal or Toronto next week, you should be looking for tickets ASAP or putting up ads now as tickets are already scarce online.

And we really wouldn’t recommend missing this show.
