Barb Mackenzie: Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur

Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur is Little Dream Bird Founder Barb Mackenzie, whose product has added and element of style to on-the-go moms and even celebrities. In five years, she’ll look to expand to boutiques across Canada, the United States, and the UK…

Elevator Pitch: Describe your business in a nutshell.
Little Dream Bird provides sleep covers, for your baby’s car seat or stroller – complete with chic designs, and functional elements. This is the first of its kind to hit the baby market and its perfect for the inspirational rock mama on the go.

Why did you start your business, what was the inspiration?
The line was a natural step for me. As a new mom, I struggled to find something that would keep my sleeping baby sheltered in style while continuing my on-the-go lifestyle. It was when I couldn’t find just the right thing that I decided to design my own original pieces that today form the Little Dream Bird collection.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
The best part of my day-to-day is getting to be creative and bringing my vision to life and building something tangible. The most challenging is finding balance in raising two kids, keeping active and spending time with my husband, friends and family.

Where do you see your business going in five years?
Expanding into children’s boutique stores across Canada, the United States and the UK.

What does success look like to you?
Achieving goals I’ve set for my company while raising my two kids, keeping the flame strong with my husband, and spending time with family and friends.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
I was up late working on emails, then my inbox chimed with a new message: it was from a celebrity who was using my car seat cover for their newborn, telling me how much they absolutely loved it!

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Don’t be afraid to set big, hairy, audacious goals. And go with your gut.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
Habitat for Humanity, because I believe shelter is a necessity and is one of the pieces to building a strong foundation. And the Salvation Army; love taking part in any of their food or holiday programs!

What is Notable to you?
Being able to set crazy goals and being even crazier to set out to achieve them.

Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
Definitely iPhone

How do you keep active, energetic, and vibrant?
Chasing my kids, Crossift, TRX, Tough Mudder, riding sports bikes, driving muscle cars, and anything else that fills me with adrenaline.
