Authentic Moroccan Cuisine at The Casbah

It's always exciting to try cuisine from another corner of the world when you're looking for a notable restaurant to try with some friends or as a date. The Casbah serves up exceptional Moroccan dishes with stunning ambiance to match and is a steady go-to for us when we're looking for something a little different

For young professionals, dinner is generally not a stuffy affair. Rather, it’s an opportunity to enjoy great food as you catch up with friends. The Casbah, located at 720 11 Ave SW (lower level), is one of Calgary’s best Moroccan restaurants because it is about more than just a meal; it is a full on experience. They have the perfect mix of delicious food and ambiance (think plush pillows and draped fabrics) to make it a memorable night out on any given night of the week and keep you coming back. In fact, they have been awarded top spot for ‘Best Ambiance’ on Calgary’s Where to Dine.

The Casbah brings authentic Moroccan cuisine to YYC diners. Both the owner and the chef are Moroccan natives who bring a wealth of knowledge when it comes to their northern African cuisine. The chef was trained in Morocco and worked at some of the best restaurants throughout Casablanca before making the move to the Great White North.

Moroccan cuisine has been at the crossroad of different civilizations, which has greatly influenced the country’s traditional dishes. People & tribes from different parts of the world have come to Morocco and settled there, creating a blended cuisine with many different flavours.

Sit back at the low tables and enjoy the complementary hand washing in rose water as you peruse the menu. We suggest dining family-style; this gives you an opportunity to taste a larger variety of the authentic and delicious dishes. Always high on our list is the lamb tagine, available with a variety of vegetable options in one of four stews.

The Casbah has also brought in a great selection of Moroccan wines and beers that pair perfectly with the food. Of course you can’t finish any meal without a traditional Moroccan mint tea.

Draped fabric curtains create private dining areas throughout the restaurant, making it a perfect spot for a romantic dinner (they have been named Calgary’s most romantic place to dine by John Gilchrist four years in a row). Saturday evenings are especially fun as they bring in belly dancers to entertain diners throughout the evening.
