April Fools’ Day: 10 Pranks to Pull on Your Coworkers That Wont Get you Fired

Ah, April Fools’ Day.

It’s a day that’s dreaded by many but can be a hell of a time if executed properly. And there’s no better place for wisecracks and shenanigans than at work.

If you’re planning on taking part in the fun this year, avoid dropping any hints about your mischievous plans. Be as a patient as possible so your colleagues will never suspect you’re the diabolical mastermind behind the pranks taking place throughout the day.

So don’t let this Friday be just another ordinary day at the office. Use it as your one day of the year to successfully get away with tormenting your colleagues with some unsuspecting fun. Just try to not do anything that will get you fired.

Newspaper Wrap
Sometimes the pranks that require a bit of extra time end with the sweetest results. You’ll need to either stay at the office late the night before or come in early, but all you need to do is take a few old newspapers and cover everything from the mouse to the computer at someone’s cubicle in newspaper.

Tamper With the Break Room
Messing with office snacks is pretty cruel, but it will definitely be hilarious to watch your co-workers freak out after they bite into something and find an unwanted surprise. Buy a dozen glazed donuts and fill them with mayonnaise and leave them in the break room.

Sticky Notes
If you have a message that you need your co-worker to receive, give it to them in the most obvious way — cover their car or office space completely with bright sticky notes. Hopefully they get the memo after this.

Ceiling Fan
Before everyone gets into the office, place confetti, glitter, shredded paper, or any other annoying material on top of the office ceiling fans. Throughout the day complain that it’s too hot in the office, and when someone eventually flicks the fan on, everyone will be in for a big surprise. Just make sure your coworkers don’t figure out you’re the one behind the mess or you’ll be the one stuck cleaning it up.

Screen Flip
This an oldie but definitely a goodie, especially if you have a few coworkers who aren’t as tech savvy as others. Click Ctrl+Alt+the down arrow and the display will flip vertically, along with the mouse controls. The only way to get the screen to return to its original setting is to click the same shortcut, only use the up arrow instead.

Out of Service
Put “out of service” signs on all the toilet cubicle doors. Watch your entire office freak out as they scramble to figure out where to go. To really step the prank up, put the same sign on the elevator doors as well.

Crossed Wires
This prank is simple, yet extremely effective. To really see your coworkers freak out, switch the telephone plugs of your colleagues’ phone lines (leaving their phones in exactly the same place) and enjoy the confusion as they repeatedly receive calls for each other.

Water Cups
Nothing is more frustrating than trying to get from point A to point B with a huge obstacle in the way. Cue the water cup prank. All you need to do is fill a bunch of paper cups with water and place them strategically in front of either a door, the pathway to someone’s desk, or on the way to the coffee machine.

Smirk it Out
The easiest way to screw with your colleagues is to sit back and do nothing at all.  To really get your coworkers’ stress levels up, give them a sly smirk and drop loaded questions throughout the day. “Enjoying your coffee?” “Have you used the water cooler yet today?” This will work especially well if your coworkers already expect you to pull something.

Mouse Sabotage
While removing a mouse’s tracker ball is always fun, simply putting a piece of tape over the back of the mouse’s laser tracker is just as effective. Make sure to secretly film your co-worker cursing at their mouse as they struggle to get it to work.
