Apple is Building a Massive Solar Farm

Yesterday we told you Apple might be entering the driverless car industry. Before the day was over, CEO Tim Cook made another major announcement to signal the company’s intent on owning the future.

Apple is building a massive, $850 million solar farm

The project comes through a partnership with Arizona-based First Solar and will cover 1,300 acres of land in Monterey, California and contribute 130 megawatts of power. That’s enough to power 50,000 homes, but will be used to juice Apple’s under-construction Cupertino ‘Campus 2’ headquarters instead, which looks like it will require all the power of the sun on its own.

On top of yielding significant energy savings over the long-term, Cook cited his company’s responsibility to the environment as a motivating factor for the splurge:

“We’re thrilled to continue on a course of doing things that make the world better than we found it… We know that climate change is real.”
