Ania Kuskowski: Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur

Elevator Pitch: Describe your job in a nutshell.
I own Pursebox.ca, a new online store that was created to fill a big gap in the Canadian accessories market. Our mission is to bring in exciting new handbag styles and brands in the affordable luxury category and give Canadians the options they’ve been missing. It’s so easy to find a great purse when you’re in the US, but in Canada retailers all seem to stock the same brands. And let’s be honest: there isn’t much middle ground between the cheap low-end and the extreme high-end when it comes to purse shopping, especially if you’re looking for something with style. Well, there’s Michael Kors, but it has become so ubiquitous that it hardly emanates true style anymore. Pursebox offers Canadians stunning new options and high-quality handbags. We’ve only been open for four months, but we have great new brands coming in all the time.

Why did you start working at your company? What was the inspiration for this career route?
I wanted to work for myself. I love doing many different things in one day, and I love learning. Entrepreneurship is the best way to do both. Also, with such a gap in the market, I really felt I could provide something of value. Online shopping is so easy and convenient – especially with Pursebox’s free shipping and free return shipping over $99. There’s no schedule, no driving to get somewhere, no fighting for parking, and you get an awesome package in the mail a few days later. Does it get any better?

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
The best part is curating the purse collection. I love contemporary fashion and bringing in beautiful brands to share with Canadians. I love imagining young professionals in their daily activities, and offering handbag styles that match the different activities and moods that make up their daily lives.

The most challenging part is imaging the experience of a new customer seeing the site for the first time. What will be their first impression of the site? Will they have a good experience? Will they find what they’re looking for? How can I help them out? I truly want to make every customer’s experience flawless and memorable. I want them to find what they’re looking for. I want them to trust that they’ll be happy with their purchase. So farm so good – we haven’t had anyone return their purchase yet.

What is one sign that you’ve seen over the years to suggest that your work/life balance is off?
I’ll let you know! I’ve only been at this for four months. But to be honest, disconnecting is hard. I’m always trying to find ways to better my offering, whether it’s in terms of product, packaging, presentation, marketing, etc.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
I see a big online store with lots of cool brands, handbags and accessories. When a Canadian woman needs a new leather purse and wants affordable luxury, she’ll think, “Oh, I need to check out Pursebox.”

What is one major challenge that you’ve had to overcome in your career? How did you overcome it?
This is my greatest challenge. Starting your own business and investing your own money in it is the most daring thing a person can do. It’s a wonderful thing, but it also takes a lot of courage, belief and perseverance. My current challenge is to maintain that momentum.

What does success look like to you? Does Money = Happiness?
Money = freedom. Success being able to look back and not have regrets. It’s also doing what you love.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
My first sale. Going live was a big deal, but my first sale made things real. I love having the opportunity to send people a product they’ll love, in a packaging that will make them feel special.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Learn. Absorb everything you can from people whose work and lifestyle you admire, and ask questions. Their work and life is a direct product of how they view the world. Expand your own view by reading. And finally, don’t be afraid of setbacks. You’ll experience them – I sure have – and it’s what you make of them that matters. They could take you to an awesome path you might have missed otherwise.

Where is your favourite place to wine/ dine in your city and why?
L’Orignal (Montreal). I used to work there when I was at McGill, and years later I still love it. A good restaurant experience is more than just about the food – it’s about delicious cuisine, but it also includes a great soundtrack, the right lighting, a warm atmosphere, and staff you can banter with. L’Orignal hits it on all counts.

When you’re not working how do you love to spend your “Me” time?
Cooking is one of my hobbies. I used to love going out to fancy restaurants – and I still do – but I also take a lot of pleasure in making delicious meals and having dinner parties at home.

Where is your favourite place to travel? Why?
Any person who loves fashion must love Paris. That’s also where I started my career in fashion.

If you had to choose a theme song, what would it be?
“I Love It” by Icona Pop. It has the right kind of energy.

If you weren’t doing what you’re doing, what would you be doing?
I would be a nutritionist. Food is my other passion!

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
I support a few charities, but my favourite is the Gazette’s Christmas fund. Its effects are immediately tangible. I like giving families the opportunity to celebrate the holidays by offering them food and gifts they can’t afford themselves. Everyone should feel warm and loved during the holidays.

What to you is notable?
Having the balls to create a life you love.

Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
100% iPhone – with an extended battery pack.
