Americans Hate Us for Telling Them They’re Great

A few days ago a Toronto ad agency produced a video featuring a bunch of do-good Canucks saying nice things about America as consolation for their decrepit state of political affairs.

#TellAmericaItsGreat, they called it.

While Canadians thought it was cute and endearing and benevolent and all, our friends south of the border considered it infuriatingly patronizing.

American sports-and-other-stuff-now-since-Gawker-is-over-blog Deadspin published a post titled ‘Please Stay the F*ck Out of This, Canada‘ in response to the video, acknowledging that despite their nightmare election season that had everyone thinking the country could sink no lower, America is actually just now among its darkest days because “Canada thinks they’re better than us.”

“Canada is your annoying friend who insists on coming over with a bottle of wine (girls night!) to tell you how everything is going to be just fine even though you got laid off, put your dog down, and found out your husband has another family,” reads the post.

A few days later, it was Jimmy Kimmel’s turn to get in on the action, calling the video the most insulting thing he’s ever seen in his life.

“I didn’t realize we were in such bad shape we needed Canada to send us a cheer up video,” he says. It actually gives us great satisfaction that he seems genuinely upset.

Oh, and he also created a pretty lame response video, which features a bunch of people saying things about hockey, bacon, maple syrup and our hot Prime Minister. Really novel stuff. Then they all take turns saying telling Canada ‘you suck’.

We guess this is what happens when you have a non-greatness complex. It was funnier when South Park did it anyway.
