A Once Homeless Toronto Woman is Now Crowdfunding Her Way to Harvard

A 32-year-old Toronto woman has set up a crowdfunding page to cover the cost of her tuition and housing costs at Harvard.

And going to the most prestigious school in the world doesn’t come cheap.

Toni Morgan needs to raise $71,000 USD (almost $87,000 Canadian) to cover her housing, mandatory health insurance, and tuition costs before she’s Boston-bound.

Against the odds, the 32-year-old non-profit programming director – who grew up in and out of shelters and dropped out of high school – was accepted to the masters of education program at the prestigious university for the fall term.

And that’s a pretty big deal for anyone, let alone someone who was told by a high school vice-president that she would never go to university.

Proving the said VP wrong, Morgan paid her way through an undergrad degree in equity and diversity studies at Ryerson thanks to telemarketing jobs.

Now, Morgan’s MO is to bring progressive perspectives into the education system that failed her, leading to a principal telling her she’s never go to university. That’s why her focus at Harvard will be on non-traditional and alternative education.

That is, as soon as the paper work clears.

Once Morgan applied for a student visa, she discovered that she only had two months to come up with the cash. In order to obtain a visa, she needed to have $71,000 by May 15.

That’s why she turned to the increasingly popular strategy of crowdfunding via the site GoFundMe, originally setting a goal of $50,000 before increasing it to $71,000.

It looks like Morgan is most definitely on her way to the Ivy League School.

As of this morning, she’s already raised $63, 845.

All we can say is, we hope part of that came from her former vice-principal.
