A Notable Shortlist for this Year’s Calgary International Film Festival

Staying on top of everything happening this month is close to impossible.

But how can you possibly say no to fantastic art house and indie films about losing your virginity and hanging out with satanic cults?

The Calgary International Film Festival runs from the 18th to the 28th, and to save you some time perusing the selection we’ve done gone ahead and put together our own shortlist of films that should definitely be on your radar.

Weekend Filmgoers
Before we get too ahead of ourselves, if you’re planning to do this festival right then make sure to start your Saturday morning out at the Ship and Anchor for Bingo Brunch. Enjoy the patio, food, and a little bingo while you put back a few mimosas with friends.

First Up
On Saturday afternoon, you can catch Advanced Style, a film that explores the world of fashion bloggers and their muses, most of whom are more familiar with retirement homes than runways.

This is The Golden Girls meets The Sartorialist. In a good way.

Bronx Obama
You have to admit there are a few great things about the US of A and here’s a film to celebrate just that. A rags to riches story of sorts, you’ll learn what happens when an unemployed Bronx resident realizes he looks like the President and decides to make a career as a political impersonator.

You can’t make this stuff up.

For Lovers
And for those of you out there who are jaded about the ‘R’ word (as in romance) you might find a little solace in the series of shorts aptly titled For Lovers, which covers all the totally insane stuff that comes with coupling.

Like the description for All’s Fair for example: A young man hires a prostitute to recreate the mundane intimacies he’s missing after a bad breakup.

Obviously, we’ve all been there…
