A Canada Post Strike Could Happen as Early as July 2

A strike is on the horizon if Canada Post and its workers can’t reach an agreement.

The strike, which would lead to a momentous disruption in deliveries, could take place as early as July 2nd.

Due to the uncertain outcome, Canada Post is beginning to warn its customers of the potential delivery interruption. The situation stems from the ongoing labour dispute between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers that has been going on for months.

Canada Post is looking for a more “flexible model” that will allow workers to make deliveries on evenings, weekends and peak times without having to pay double time.

While both parties are ready to head to the negotiating table and hammer out a deal, they fall apart on key issues. The union’s main concerns are about job security and pension reform, claiming what the company really wants is a lockout.

“The union is currently conducting strike votes across the country, and we are getting prepared in the event that the employer does decide to lock us out,” said Jennifer Savage of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.

This isn’t the first time that Canada Post employees’ jobs were in turmoil. Five years ago, workers were locked out over another dispute, only to be legislated back to work shortly after.

For now, the government is reviewing the postal service, including the future of home delivery, which Canada Post wants to cut.

If the company follows through with ending particular services, they could follow through with using drones as an alternative for mail delivery.
