6 Winter Sports You Probably Didn’t Know You Could Try In and Around Toronto

The words winter and exercise might not go together like indoor and gym.

But that’s still no excuse to hibernate indoors all season long. So grab your sense of adventure, a couple (or 12) extra layers, and get motivated to enjoy some winter sports you probably didn’t know existed in and around Toronto.

Snow-Kiting
The closest you’ll come to flying this winter is snow kiting. A variation of skiing, this sport needs a large open space and wind to send you across the ice and through the air. You’ll be able to steer with handles and a harness, and the kite is a parachute that acts as a sail, and Toronto kite club will provide all the equipment you need to do it.

Skating
So skating isn’t exactly breaking new ground (unless you’re the one Canadian who’s never done it), but it’s the where that we have in mind. When the ice on Lake Ontario freezes it can be an absolutely beautiful way to spend a day. And if you find the idea a little daunting but want more space than the average rink to play with, Arrowhead Ice Skating Trail is a beautiful skating trail through the forest.

Snow Tubing
There is no level of fitness or skill required for snow tubing. Just pure, unadulterated joy and exhilaration. Simply hop into the tube, grab onto a friend, and go speeding (and screaming) down the hill. Instant winter gratification.

Ice Climbing
This is definitely an activity for outdoor adventurers who eat snow for breakfast (or something more intrepid). You’ll learn how to tie the rope and belay, as well as how to properly climb and use an ice axe. All equipment will be provided, including crampons, helmets, and harnesses so all you need to bring is your sense of adventure – and for the love of God, wear layers.

Fat Biking
Winter and snowfall don’t have to signal the end of the road for mountain biking enthusiasts. Fat bikes are the solution to cycling on unstable terrain, with frames and tires purpose-built for extreme versatility, allowing you to float easily over snow and ice.

Dog-Sledding
If that all sounds a little too energetic, sit back, snuggle up and allow man’s best friend to pull you through a winter wonderland. Some dog-sledding companies will take you out on a guided expedition of the area too, plus with some packages there’s the option to stay overnight.
